So, Larry reminded me that the Victor Valley Gem and Mineral Club is having their annual Stoddard Wells Tailgate Show next month (http://vvgmc.org/tailgate.html).
I'm going to try and get the family up there on Saturday (3/9). Anyone else in? Be great to meet in person!
Thanks Paul

Man, how I wish I could. But driving that distance in the middle of winter is out of the question.

Is there rockhounding right near there? I know there is rockhounding within say 50 miles of there, but is there rockhounding like RIGHT there? I think Larry once said there was.

Oh man, I miss that tailgate. It was always one of my favorites for rough rock and slabs, great prices and fun folks. Last one I went to before moving to Texas, the desert was all in bloom during the tailgater and the weather was pure perfection.
Blue: There are sites for serpentized marble ( verde antique) in green and yellow hues, tri color marble and also black jade with metallic inclusions right near the site of the tailgate but I think the huge numbers of folks visiting the show have depleted the good stuff pretty well by now. Someone at the show should be able to show you the area to search as it's just up and over the hill a bit....Mel

They're taking a field trip up to the old tri-colored marble site on Saturday morning at 9:00 AM. While we'll be up there, I doubt very much I'll be able to get the family up that early.
See you all up there! Paul

We'll probably go on Friday to beat the crowds and buy all the good rock before Susan cleans the place out! We really enjoy this show, probably more so than Quartzsite. Has just enough of everything, high quality and perfect size. Sure hope JSGems will be set up there this year which will then make it a complete event. Fingers are crossed on the weather. Looking forward to see all of Christopher's new material he collected during all his mega hounding trips out in Arizona.

dang, I sprained my MCL last night umpiring a high school baseball game. Cannot make the hike to the old verde antique. Susan on the hill above the show there is a "verde nuevo" quarry with green yellow and blue marble. I have a fabulous sphere of it. My largest yet!

What day will you be setting up Christopher? We are going but don't know what day yet. We will be setting up grit/polish/ceramics and maybe a few rocks but will have a lot of inventory with us.

Looking forward to seeing you all. The show was great last year although we never made it past Christopher's table. Spent the whole afternoon standing around chatting with the folks from the forum.

I hope to get out there Wed. also. Hard with the iffy phone service there. I'm sure the wireless won't work either. Last time we set up we found a spot behind us where our phone worked and had to stand there to make calls. Kind of hard with a business to be out of touch.

Only the Verison people had service. Otherwise it was a mile or two to get around the mountain for service.
