Hi All,
My name is Paul and I recently have been bitten by the absolute stunning, breathtaking, and mesmerizing beauty of rocks.
My wife, Holly, has been a rock hound as long as we have been married (23 years), but she did not have the resources (me) to expand her lapidary prowess.
She has a very modest collection of rocks that I had no interest in, until now! She quietly collected over the years, said nothing to me about it. Occasionally, she would be admiring her collection and try to get me to look at some particular specimen, I would take it, turn it over and hand it back, then say "That's nice Hun, what is it?" to be nice.
All that has changed in the last few months. I retired a few years back due to illness, but I am still going pretty damn strong for what is a terminal illness. Having so much time on my hands lead me to look at my wife's rocks a lot closer. She was very happy and very helpful in giving me a tour of her collection, once she noticed my attention towards her pets. (yea, some had names, like "sandwich")
We decided to buy a rock tumbler (Covington model 253TUM) and we are learning as much as we can about rocks, gems, and minerals.
I found this forum after looking for information about rock tumbling, BINGO!! Just what my wife and I were looking for. It's nice that so many people, who enjoy a great hobby, can get together here at RTH.
I have spent some time reading the forums to help me with my grinds. My first batch should be ready this Saturday after 7 weeks and hopefully many more to follow as the weeks and months role on. One thing I have learned is Borax is your friend.
We also have been shopping around to purchase a saw (14" to 16") and later, a cabochon machine. And to be honest, hopefully, after some posts and interactions with other members here on RTH, (building trust with others) I hope I can get some decent deals on some equipment. It's up to me to prove it, I know.
About me, served in the Navy 1975-1979 with Patrol Squadron 1 (VP-1) Stationed at Barber's Point, Hawaii, (I know) Honorably Discharged an Aviation Anti-Submarine Warfare Operator 2nd Class (AW2). I flew around in a P-3 Orion sub-hunter operating the radar and other electronic gathering devices.
Worked construction until December 15th,2010, with 25 years in the Operating Engineers Local Union #3 Operated a motor grader
for most of the time.
I joined the Masonic Lodge many years ago and currently am a member of Calaveras Lodge #78 F and A M, located in San Andreas. Nice group of people who help others. (Not world domination)
Been retired for over 2 years (still alive) and looking to cut, grind, and polish some of my wife's rocks.
That's it for now, as I type like a chicken walking across the keyboard, hunt and peck, hunt and peck. It takes forever.
Nice to meet you Sir or Mam.
Sincerely,
Paul
