Relativly new to tumbling(less than 1 yr) Really new to jewelry making(2 months) and newborn to carving. I am wanting to carve letters and simple symbols onto polished rocks that have an average hardness of 7ish. Before I go buy some usless junk and waste time and money I figured I'd ask here. I tried searching the forums but all I could find was a post in '04 about sandblasting. Anyway, I'll be using a dremel to do these simplistic carvings and need to know what type bits I need to buy. And possibly a good place to find them. I know for a beginner it will be a challenge but I have been carving things with the dremel for a long time. Mostly making parts to fix things. So I think I can manage. One last thing...When it comes to carving these letters how slow would you recommend cutting into the rock? I have carved metals, plastics, and wood but never rock. Thanks for any advice.

Get some Diamond burrs (ball shapes) in the size you would like to create your letters in. Angular burrs would give you other options.
But before anything else: how big a design are we talking about.

Here is a post I made a short time ago for locations to buy burrs and core drills. I do not think that you should start with cheap burrs because you will need to learn all over again with the higher priced ones. Jim

Design size.....Not real big. Maybe ranging from 1-3 inches. Not a lot of detail at this point. Just letters and things like smiley faces. Simple stuff to start with.
