I finally got around to finish sanding and adding oil to my carving. I am heating it up to get better penetration of the oil. I have no idea how it is going to turn out after sitting for a while. I am hoping for at least a dull shine after a few coats of oil. Critiques welcome and thanks for looking. I hope you like my rock. Jim

Love the strong colors, yet looking forward to different angles to really see that baby-dragon.
Fantastic, to see this coming to fruition.

Roy, the oil works about like wax but is a lot easier. If I put hot wax on it getting the wax polished on places like the face is very difficult. Alabaster is too soft to polish by just sanding. Jim

The fairy and baby dragon carving is beautiful, Jim!! What kind of oil did you place on the alabaster? Mineral oil? Did you heat it with the lamp? (sorry for the stupid questions  )

Thanks all. I am going to take some better photos after it sits for a while.
Not dumb questions brat. Yes I used mineral oil. I would have liked to use the oil that the Chinese use but I do not have any. The lamp is there to heat the stone and oil. One of those lamps that is for 60 watt bulb only and we put 100s in then burn ourselves multiple times. Jim

Do you have a name for the Chinese oil? Or is it cooked up in secret? Might be able to ask around.

KK I do not have a name. It was originally used as a hair oil then someone figured out that it was really good for penetrating the stone. I have a mailing address for someone in China that has some of it. I will see if I can come up with an email address. If I sent the mailing address to you could you get in touch with him?
Jason, bee's wax will work if there is no intricate carving. With a carving like this it would be impossible to rub the wax out of all the little nooks and crannies. With bees way it is necessary to rub the stone with a rag when the stone starts cooling so you get a shine. Jim

Can certainly try.
I asked the guy who fixes up small metal-work (but does carving himself too) for me last time, and all he showed me was some commercial stuff you can buy in hardware-shops, so I not even bothered getting the name.

Way back when you started this, I was concerned about the stone choice - the pattern makes her look demonic, or diseased - especially in the face. My lone criticism...
The carving is wonderful - first rate work. You are getting better all the time. Couldn't imagine the effort required.

toad - I agree about the stone choice. When I was doing the carving the face was what I worried about the most. The worry turned into reality. I am very unhappy about how the face turned out but such is life. Disliking it is not going to change it so I just accept it and look at it like she could be beautiful in another world. lol I had the stone and the picture and nothing was going to get in my way of carving that picture.
The sensible thing would have been to call my stone supplier and ask her for a different stone. I have never claimed that I have any sense though. Having a talent for carving does not automatically give a person sense. lol
I have some other stones but none of them have told me what they want to be so I am waiting for some inspiration. I never know when it is going to happen and the fairy/dragon was almost three years after my previous carving. I hope it does not take that long for the next one to come along.
Thanks to all for your encouragement and thank you toad for an honest opinion. I like that in my posts. Jim

Hi, Carving is beautiful. I am amazed at the ability to carve rock. Jim, Just a note to say Thank you for my wonderful selection. You really have some beautiful pieces. The sunrise piece is my favorite. the colors are spectacular. I really appreciate your thoughtfulness. When the snow is disappeared, I hope that your move will be successful. If you truly need some help, I have friends in Gurnsey that would be ready for action.
