I was surfing eBay... again... when I saw this butt ugly broken owl clock made of rhodochrosite. Well, I have been trying to win some rough, but it is getting so hard to get that I thought this might be the way to go. I tried to get the base off with acetone. No go. I tapped it, which resulted in several pieces breaking off. I cabbed them today. The largest cab is 37mm long. I've already made my money back. And, there's plenty of nice cabs left to go. Anyone have any ugly old rhodo clocks they want to sell?

Good grief you destroyed a masterpiece Heh, j/k.. good find and wow super nice cabs! My first nice piece of malachite was a broken ashtray I picked up for cheap and made for some killer cabs. I'll be watching for rhodo owls from now on ;D

Even a butt-ugly broken owl clock is right twice a day....
oh...no hands....
Seriously, what a great way to save great stone from a fate worse than death. Excellent salvage!

Very inventive! I know quite a few raw materials can now be exported only in finished forms. Ron's Rocks back in California used to buy carvings from stuff like that Ocean wave Dolomite and saw them up for slabs and lots of folks buy Zaire malachite carvings to saw up. I've got a monster freeform carving on my desk right now I've been eyeballing as the malachite has some nice bullseyes.
Ron told me the Chinese have set up buyers trailers at many gemstone sites now and buy all the top quality rough for their carving industry so in many cases, buying up those less expensive carvings and cabbing them up may be a good option....Mel

There is more than one way to skin an Owl, or break an Owl, or cab an Owl. Good call miss Tela!!
