After talking and seeing pics of baculites,I realized I have never posted a pic of my favorite baculite in my collection... I found it about 23 years ago and a story goes with it too... I had my 3 year old stepdaughter with me and we were hunting fossils in Montana and were on a slightly angled hill of shale(loose crap I call it)! I spotted this baculite in its host shell, must have weighed 70 pounds or so.So I was going to leave it where it was. My stepdaughter told me we had to take it with us!LOL... I told her(Shar),if you can figure how to get it up that hill,I'll take it with us! She thought for a few minutes, than said,"hey,we could break it in a few pieces and haul it up there"...Dang,why didn't I think of that.LOL So I broke it in three sections and took it home, removed the baculite out of the host rock than glued the sections back together, and presto, this is the find......(sorry,its been so long since I held it,I remeasured it and its only 17 inches long, not 22...Must be the fisherman in me)...LOL

It is odd that they would reject that in the old days. Those are spectacular specimens and of an unusual creature. That type of fossil is in high demand this day and age,eh.

That is a winner. I have a section of this about1.5 inches long and polished. The gold sutures against the dark brown are gorgeous. You have a lucky find and a smart daughter!

I love that I helped inspire such a great walk down memory lane. that is a very nice piece , and a priceless memory goes with it, to cool.. something to keep at all cost for sure. My memory is not as classic but still made much more vivid by the specimen. Things like that might as well be made from pure gold. That's why I have a hard time thinking of cutting mine ,it's the only one I got and I got it from a place full of fuzzy memories of my youth. Anyway here is a better pic or 2 of mine and a few other shells I found near by it was the only time I ever saw anything worth collecting in that polluted old water way ... Top view you can see shell, symmetric shape and on the right end the odd chip where there is a shell under the skin .. Attachments:

I couldn't believe it when I found the shale poking up out of the sand . Oh and this was Sand Creek .. no where near the famous massacre but part of the system of creeks called "sand".I used to have lots more and do have some others I might post. The little chalk white looking thing on top left I think was a sea snail.. Attachments:
