www.flickr.com/photos/67205364@N06/sets/72157632959424187/The highest hills within 1/2 mile of the river or so are the spots to hunt on the Rio in south Texas. They are high because of erosion prevention. They were protected from erosion because of the cobbles. The cobbles are there because turns in the ancient river deposited the larger cobbles and deeper deposits of cobbles. The larger cobbles are sought after by us rock hounds. The variety is incomprehendable. Some folks know where all those varieties washed down from-where the veins the cobbles originated from.Which river shed they washed down from. From Mexico, west Texas,New Mexico, probably Colorado.Which hillside, valley, lava flow. Other collectors concentrate on cobble deposits in the lake, especially at low lake level during late summer and in to winter. Then there are the woods, palms, grape vines, fern roots, root balls and other woody petrifications that may be local?who knows

Great photo tour James. I've never actually gone out hand hunted the hills, just roadsides. Hope to get down there and do it this spring though as I have an invite to visit a friends ranch....Mel

I do not go on Facebook much.Am happy w/the pace on a forum.Gettin old and grumpy i geuss.Ha I could move to the Rio area and rock hunt there for the rest of my life. There and my coral rivers and that's all i need.I am into those territories and having travelled a lot of the world i know what i like.Except Floridians like Helen are to mean to live around:>That's why you are better off visiting there!!I like the rivers.Cause you can use a boat and get in the water when it's hot. But the Rio has stuff no one has an idea what it is and where it came from. And you can find 10 pebbles in a 3 foot circle of cab grade and every one so different. And 2 of the 10 will baffle the best as to what they are.
PS That was a pair of tortiose, and i picke one up and seperated them by 5 feet. They would come back to each other in a hurry. The were male and female and seemed to have a strong bond.A badger was in the middle of the road.I stopped the car and walked towards it.It acted like i was not there and made me feel intimidated.I got back in the car and let it alone.Never knew they were in Texas. The roadrunners were clowns.Lot of wild life in the desert.

THanks for sharing, those are INCREDIBLE!! Lol, I'm planning on moving to AZ when I retire for the rocks, and now I'll have to make road trips to the Rio Grande to rock hound there! Absolutely amazing finds, wow.

Please go there.Contact me and i will give you help.I scored well on very first visit. It is strange to find agate in every gravel parking lot, gravel pile and gravel road assuming the gravel came from the pits along the river(about half of the local gravel).Hey,Arizona is about as good as it gets.
