Something unusual happened on last Saturday...it was dry, and sunny! So, we set up the ger for a trial run, and final adjustments. When the photos were taken, I had not tucked in the wall covers at the door, or tucked the rainskirt under the walls, and the very top was off to the boat canvas shop getting plastic windows sewn in. Anyhow, since I a couple of us will be living in it at the end of the month in Oregon's high desert at 4500 feet we wanted to make sure everything went to together as it was supposed to. Since this is a portable rig like a tent, all the covers (there is white cotton liner, half an inch of felt insulation, and a canvas outer cover) all overlap so everything will fit no matter how level or not the ground is. It is supposed to look baggy. Woody The front. The back. The inside.

Looks great. Certainly roomier than a tent. How about water coming in along ground-level, or high winds (don't see anything really holding it to the ground)?

Yeah, how long did it take? How wide is it on the inside? So cool. I have a friend in Tennessee who has one and her daughter and family lived in it for a year. Jo

My first look inside one of those. Very interesting and roomy! Those Mongolians. The best barbecues and now the best temporary housing.
Is there really only that expanding lattice for walls? What supports the weight?

Brings back old memories of when my wife and I were volunteer yurt hosts in state parks in OR. I couldn't believe how popular they were and there was rarely a vacancy.

To answer a few questions. first nothing holds them down, they are aerodynamically shaped so just sit there in a wind....at least in Mongolia. Me, I just might put a stake down in a wind. The orange material at the bottom is the ground skirt, and tucks under the wall to keep water out. The roof is actually self supporting ....the centre pole are actually there to put the roof up. Without the centre poles it will support my weight on the roof (175#) The lattice walls have three tension bands around the out side, one of which is just over the lattice, the other three over the canvas. This one is 4.5 meters in diameter, so about 15 feet. In Mongolia, two women put one of these up in 45 minutes that might be 25 feet in diameter. It took two of us (males) 1 1/2 hours. The first time. Compared to a tent, this will be Glamping (glamour camping) I have been doing Glass Buttes in March for several years now, and living in the back of Big Red..it went down to -15 at night last year. This is the main reason I have built this Ger. Woody

I keep threatening the boy with moving to Mongolia to live in a Yurt and breed Yaks. They are very versatile. Looks like you've done a great job with it.
