For example, wire wrapped cabochon earrings that have a front and back. I had an interesting discussion with another jeweler on this topic and I'd like to see what RTH says.

Alright gang, tell me why you voted the way you did! right now the vote is split 50/50. Is this a matter of personal preference? if you make earrings do you make them to face forward or to the side?

Generally, I don't care which of the two options are used. However, your earrings are wide and have weight, and could therefore bounce against the jaw bone if facing front. There is more room to swing if facing outward.
If the earrings are thin front to back and narrow, I don't think it matters unless they are big rounds. In that case, they should face outwards, too. It would be uncomfortable for earrings to touch the face.
If I had a pair of earrings that faced the uncomfortable way, I'd just fix it.

for me it depends on the stone and the wrap style, some would look better facing front and some better facing side
matter of personal preference

Hang from the ears, and no other body parts.

First,me say that those are very nicely done earings! Don, here is my 2 pennies woRTH. When talking with a women, you're talking face to face and that, to me, would seem logical to face the stones or design forward for the best presentation. I think that is what the wearer would most prefer. What was the reason for the purchase? Was there even any thought by the purchaser as to how they hung? I also agree with Pat as to the comfort to the wearer. I think most women consider this to some extent in a purchase. Very good poll question and I will follow this with interest

If you know who the earrings are for, then they should face the way that person's earrings usually face. Uh, guys, you have noticed the way your wife wears her earrings, haven't you?

If the earrings face the rear, swap ears and they'll face forward. Problem solved.

Faces forward, of course! Earrings are meant to accentuate the face, not the side of the head! Unless, of course, they're hoop earrings or large like Pat mentioned.

I don't think most women give it any thought, but would recognize if something wasn't right/comfortable. That would mean too long, too heavy , too pokey, or the wrong color or just plain ugly.

Thanks for the input folks, as a non-wearer of earrings I'm rather out of the loop on how they're worn and what is preferred. we had a pair come back because they hung to the side; ok, no big deal, I added a couple jump rings and now they faced forward and the customer was happy. these were fold form leaves earrings and most of our inventory are setup to hang from the side. We've sold several pairs and no on had indicated a problem until then.

Laughing at Don's posts.
How about a swivel mount that allows the wearer to adjust them? I really do think it depends on the wearer. Some people have ears that stick out, some lay flat against the head, and everything in between.

Just as you have that pair, Don. They dangle and will face front and side that way.
