A while back, Stoner/Ed mentioned using a rotary drill to make a cab... so I did. After marking the wrong side, glueing the wrong side to the bolt, not hitting in the center, I now have my first rotary drill cab. It was fun. It is not round like I initially wanted it to be, but it is roundish. I'll call it a design element ;D The drill was about $15 at Harbor Freight. Runs on big battery; a bit heavy, but it doesn't take long to do. 1. 2. 3. Going to try more. I like rounds and freeforms. Hmmm, wonder if I can do a free form using this drill... Thanks for looking!

Pat, did you run it on a flat lap? What shape was it before you started? I want to try the same thing.

Rob, no. I did it all on the Genie. Today, I am flat lapping the back so I can use a stepped bezel.
Initially, it was just a slab. I think (it's been a while) that I just cut it to shape on my 4" tile saw. Might have used a core drill, but if so, it went all wacky when I marked the wrong side, then couldn't get it centered on the bolt. Trying to round it out on the Genie, it went cha-chunk-a-chunk for quite a while to get a rounder shape.
Good thing I like free-forms : )
Try it. It's fun and fast.

Nice! I usually work the cab on a dop and get it rounded looking before I hit the drill, then lay it on a brace so the cab hits the wheel at the same place, and pressure. Easy does it. If you try to rough out a slab on the drill you can have a better chance of breaking it, if it has corners T

I am going to have to try this! I always have a bit lopsided rounds. Just can't seem to get them perfect. Love the rhodonite too! Fran
