Started a snake-project recently in two-layered petwood, but after freeing the snake, I didn't get any ideas for the back of the piece. So I started something else. Montana agate And done: One more time a bit closer Montana agate still remains one of my favorite materials to work with and its sad to see how under-appreciated this wonderful material is (both in art and in monetary terms). Best regards and have a great weekend ahead, Kurt

Thanks everyone.
Montana is fun to work with as there are few growthrings if any, and hence allows a lot more designs than most agates Inclusions while in a huge range too, are seldom too dominant to take away from any design ideas that the basecolor might have inspired.
Sorry about the grid question as I don't have an answer to that. Most base work up to the second set of pictures have been done with cutting-wheels. Plus I buy burrs in the shop basically one by one. None of that stuff is labeled, so I buy by feel, rough and fine. That's all I know about the grid I'm afraid.
Till here for now, thanks again for all the kind comments, remain herewith, Kurt

That is gorgeous!! Can I use your pattern to try another carving? I just love it. Tammy Absolutely no problem with me. Unfortunately not an original idea. I saw it as pendant with the flower being made of porcelain (I think), and a red cab underneath a couple of weeks ago. Love orchids in general and that was just the best excuse to get something going. Will PM you the saved picture in a few hours, when I get back to my own computer.

My mind is blown! That's amazing!!
What sort of tools are you using to polish with? That is amazing and completely above my pay grade, but would be something my husband would be good at.

My mind is blown! That's amazing!! What sort of tools are you using to polish with? That is amazing and completely above my pay grade, but would be something my husband would be good at. KISS principle! ;D ;D For me, the polish comes through hand-sanding with 220/400/600/1200/2000 grid paper followed by 50000 Diamond-paste on felt and then leather to clean up. Montana is often fractured and especially where two strong colors meet, is easy to crumble. But for me, the danger of that is only present during the cutting-stage (Hand-held Dremel, 2 inch blade) because its unstable by hand and I sometimes put undue pressure on places where I should not. But as soon as grinding starts, Montana has always held up very well for me.
