As I've mentioned before, I have a fascination with desert trees and shrubs so have planted a few in our yard. This Huisache is the first to come into bloom for the spring and though it's not nearly in full bloom yet, I thought since we are due for hard freezes the next two nights, I'd better snap a pic before all the flowers get froze off. This shrub/tree is so aromatic they use the flowers for perfume production and when in full bloom, the plants smell is almost overpowering. Couple of pics......Mel Got to watch out for this plant, very nasty thorns and lots of them. Closer look at the flowers which are about 1/2 at largest. Wind is blowing hard this afternoon so pic is a bit out of focus.

Don't want to be around that one when the wind is whipping around. Those are nasty thorns. Hope the freeze doesn't get it! I bet that is spectacular when it is in full glory

Mel,you are the first person I've ever heard of planting one of these on purpose! They aren't well thought of in our country.I've got one on my place and you are welcome to come dig it up! Don't want to hijack your thread, just add to it! Caught my dog marking his territory! This is across the highway from me.If these aren't dug up by the roots, this is what all the country would look like, mesquite too! But have to admit, they are colorful. snuffy

*L* I actually bought a mesquite and planted it too. Planted a retama, native mimosa and a golden ball lead tree too. Nursery guy thought I was a bit nuts, I think...Mel

That's a pretty plant! The only trees around here that are covered with flowers are the dogwood trees. The flowers are white, really pretty but they only last for a week or two until the leaves come in.
