OK, got back from our outing to the Santa Barbara/Ventura area. I worked the beach behind the Fairgrounds. Did I find anything worthwhile? There is still a big bucket to go through. Attachments:

I see some quartsite and maybe some chert in the lower row. The most recognizable materials from that collecting area are agatized whalebone and brecciated jasper that looks a bit like Stone Canyon. Lots of sandstone in the hills that drain into the river so there is also a lot of metamorphic quartzite.....Mel

billg: The whalebone really looks like bone with excellent cell structure. Colors are usually not fancy, browns and rootbeer color with nice black and blue ones being scarce but no mistaking it's bone at all. If you check the Agate//Jasper database files for California linked under cab cutting section, there should be a good pic or two of whalebone....Mel

Thanks Mel, I searched all over looking for anything that looked like a bone. I even found a beef rib bone. I even went into the state park a bit. I'll check the bucket for others. Before I went out, I checked google imaged for whalebone and was on the lookout for those pictures. I got a bunch of garden rock if anything. Thanks again for all your help.

I really hope you had a good time up here last weekend! Here's a couple photos of whale bone - rough and polished. May you find a piece buried in your bucket, Lowell

Lowell, If whale bone is that size, it's not in the bucket. I was looking for anything that had that outside crust look. I have some of the smaller material tumbling right now. I'll be looking for that inside look.
We had a great time up there in Ventura. Our first stop was the Santa Ynez river near Lake Cachuma. We came back with a bucket of tumbling material and a craving for a BBQ dinner. We ended up going to Wood Ranch BBQ. Dinner hit the spot. I even came away with a new favorite BBQ sauce, Habanero-Peach.
After all the hiking around, we felt pretty rested for only spending one night away from home. Must be the fresh air! Thanks again for all the help. Bill G
