Well, today was just flat too pretty to stay inside. We had 3/4 inch of rain yesterday and it's sunny today. A little humid but I figured I'd go hike the White Oak Creek trail just for fun. We have a couple of miles of White Oak Creek just before it hits the Pedernales River. Very pretty walk. Here are just a couple of pics. The creek. Bald Cypress are just popping out and the jade greens are really nice. Some of these are about 6 feet thick and maybe 80 or more feet high. A little friend along the creek. This is a Texas Spiny Lizard. Kind of like the Western Fence Lizard we had back in California but way larger. Stopped by the caliche pit to check for fossils for the next time I take kids out for a nature walk. Found a nice Niethea scallop. I don't have a nice one in my collection so this is a keeper. Next to it is a Texagrypha oyster. These are all over the place. Few sea urchins laying around too: And finally a pretty posy. Not too many wildflowers out year but they're coming. This is Prairie Verbena.

Wow, beautiful area. I had no idea that there were cypress trees that far west and north. Now that I think about it you are probably more south than the only natural lake (caddo) sp) in Texas on the Louisiana border and it has almost all cypress trees there.
I bet the kids have a ball fossil hunting there because the pickings look great.
Thanks for taking us along on your walk. Jim

That's just stunning. Almost worth bearing snow to see a spring like that. Almost:).

Helen: Snow is a rarity here otherwise I wouldn't live here *L*. We only get snow that sticks a bit maybe every other year for maybe a day. Mostly we feel pretty darn tropical....Mel

Actually... when I was really young, I went to Houston with my mom... and I will NEVER EVER EVER forget how HOT and humid it was... Grant you, this was coming from NY, where at worst there's a week of heatwaves every few years... but the average summer temps were 70s and 80s.
Houston was near 100 degrees and the 100% humidity felt like it was 200 degrees. Now maybe because I was so young, I am not fairly recalling it (you know how memories from youth are different when you revisit as an adult?), but it was the most miserable weather I ever saw in my entire life. I have never been that hot and miserable in Florida (probably because when it's that hot out, I hide in the AC:P)
On the other hand, I have never ever ever seen snow here.. if you get snow a few days a winter... that would be almost perfect!!

Helen: We're actually on the Edwards Plateau which is I think, about 2000 feet in elevation. We are cooler and drier than Houston but also breezier. Very clean air as a result of that though. We do get some hot temps like the rest of Texas but "it's a drier heat" *L*. I know what you mean about the coastal plain. When we go hunt pet wood down at George West and get off the plateau and down in that thornbrush country nearer the coast, the humidity hits us like a hammer. Definitely very noticeable increase in the discomfort factor *L*.....Mel
