Hi All,
We will be heading west (yippie) the end of May - into June and would love, no NEED, to include rockhounding into our itinerary. If anyone could please give advice on locations near our route I would be very grateful!
Nashville, TN to Rapid City SD then on to Yellowstone - south through the grand Tetons to the Thomas Range. Down to Hurricane UT to visit relatives then home back via Denver. We have just under 3 weeks to make the loop and want to spend several days at the Topaz Mtn Amphitheater. Beyond that site, we have no real plans for collecting. Would love to get things I can get here in the east. Agate, petrified wood, anything blue, cuprite, topaz... okay so I'm not picky ;D I just love rocks ;D

Anywhere between Wall, S.D. and Rapid City, and 50 miles south of that area is prime Fairburn agate and prairie agate hunting. Just be sure you're on public land. Gravel along the Cheyenne River is especially productive, and you may even find some fossils and pet wood.

lots of possibilities between delta UT and Hurricane UT for hounding depending on what you want to go after and how much time you have.

Thank you to everyone for responding.
Don, I sent you a PM with more questions, thanks for the information!!
Jakesrocks - Question about the fairburn agate (OMG they are beautiful) and the Cheyenne River. Looked it up on the map and it runs for a long ways. Can you be more specific? At best I will have a half a day in the area, what would be the one spot you would try?
KAP- I will certainly bring you back something!! I still have a piece of Paint Rock in my truck for you. Hopefully I'll see you at the Graves Mountain openhouse in a few weeks.
