Howdy folks, Well, yesterday a rare thing occurred, I actually had a free day for a field trip. Had horseback rides for Friday-Sunday but Thursday was all mine so the wife and I got up early and headed down to the George West/Simmons City area for a pet wood hunt. It's about a four hour drive each way with about five hours for the actual hunt so I really hit it. Unfortunately, these hunts are not long for the world. Oil exploration has really hit the region and all our wonderful public access pet wood hunting roads are gradually being covered by new caliche surface making the wood unavailable. No scenery pics this time too as the area was quite dry and we had missed all the wildflowers and butterflies. Anyway, here's our yield from the expedition, maybe 100-150# of good wood. Somehow I lost my best shrinkwood specimen. I was wearing a side slung bag that got too full and I guess that piece spilled out and I could not re-find it. I did however find my prettiest piece of palm ever and the big long specimen just above my hammer head in the pic is also excellent palm. Now I get the fun of washing everything off and sorting, my favorite part next to the actual hunt. I'll post more pics of the treasures after they are cleaned up....Mel

Nice haul, Mel. Like you said, the real fun begins when you knock the dirt off and see what you got!
You're probably right, snuffy. Although it's probably not happening as fast in Texas as it does in "Commifornia"... You don't have Feinstein or Boxer. And it doesn't matter if you NEED anymore rocks or not, it's enough to just WANT it! Besides, it's the fun of the hunt, the company you keep, being in the great outdoors, and the exercise you get. Yeah, the rocks are just a bonus. Jean
