I bought this 17 lb piece of Chinese pertrifi4d wood at the Austin Swap and Trade this morning. When I told the elderly lady (she is my age ;D) that I intended to slab it, she was horrified (didn't stop her from selling it to me though ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) ) So I'm thinking that I may just slab a couple pieces and that's it. I normally don't keep display pieces but I just may this time. Any opinions? ![](http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p530/abbygolden/Austinswap002_zpsc6ef922a.jpg) ![](http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p530/abbygolden/Austinswap001_zps20d4c4bd.jpg)

I would not slab that unless there were bolder patterns on the face cut

I would not slab that unless there were bolder patterns on the face cut I think I'll take a chance and at least even off the butt end. ;D

Is that the actual wood grain I see on the surface? If so, I would only slab it parallel to that plane, if I were to slab it at all. You wouldn't want to lose that premium wood grain by cutting into slabs that won't show it.

You wouldn't want to lose that premium wood grain by cutting into slabs that won't show it. I agree with you but since I only have a 16" saw, I would have to cut it in thirds in order to go with the grain. Initially, I think I'll just take off a butt piece to see if it holds any promise. If it does, I'll worry over any decisions going forward from there.
