I was wondering what one does with the end cuts when making slabs. Do you tumble it whole, break it up then tumble or nothing at all.. Rookie question and thought it might be interesting to see some end results of your end cuts. Thanks to all, this forum has been a great learning place.. Mike

If they're solid enough, cab them. Montana Moss end nub cabs.

I cut as close to vise as I can, then take it out and glue it too wood. I can usully get all of the rock slabbed. The end cuts go in the tumbler. Later Clyde

Thanks, it is neat to see what can be done with them. I did not realize the outside of the rock will be worked away to have such nice looking cabs.. I can see a lot of experimenting here in the near future. Mike

Mike, before you try cabbing end nubs, inspect them carefully for surface cracks and deep pits. I make my first cut (end nub cut) just a little thicker than 1/4" to allow for any extra grinding.

I look forward to seeing what everyone had done with their end cuts. Should be a blast seeing what you have created. Mikie

I think most just throw them in the tumble bucket. But if they're solid and have good color, why not cab them ?

I hoard them... they are a great way to see what the original rock looks like and what's inside. Just in case one of these days I run across one like it, I might pick it up because it reminded me of one of my end cuts:P.
For a rock lover who's never been out west to actually see rocks in the wild, having the slab with the skin intact may help me find rocks someday:P.

I tumble them to see what fractures or pits might be present then I cab them. Bob
