Wow, that's terrible. Sure hope he doesn't face imprisonment (12 years?!) for collecting 'artifacts.'

Ugh... isn't Turkey the country the movie Midnight Express was about years ago? I'm too lazy to look.
They described the 'artifacts' in that article. A piece of brick and a corner of a bldg. rock is an artifact? What the heck? I'll bet the US Embassy there gets involved real quick.

Unless they are undercover CIA, those folks are effed.

Lucky he is a tourist. According to a friend of mine, looting by locals, of any kind of things perceived artifacts is usually rewarded with a bullet on sight if caught.

You ARE subject to foreign prosecution in a foreign land... but clearly that law is biased, because I'll bet Turkish people do not get threatened with jail for picking up an unmarked broken brick. If they are discriminating against Americans, you bet the US Embassy will get involved. And you can also recall that Turkey is a NATO nation and an ally... with border issues. Throwing Americans in jail over useless bricks is not endearing, and I can't see it happening without repercussions they will be made aware of. Unless the article lied and this guy was at some archeological site stealing chunks of statues. If they really were artifacts, that's one thing, but that's not what the article said.

Turkey is one bad place for an American to be!!! We had "Turks" working for our American bases in Europe while I was stationed there. Believe me,they dislike American people-period!!!
