A bladderwort-utricularia inflata takes over 1/4 acre shallow lily pond. The deer ate all the water lilies last year so the carnivorous bladderwort took over.It is a native plant and is a pest in Washington state(Horse Shoe Lake) and endangered in NY,Mich,TN. Pond is well balanced and supports healthy population of critters including whopper bluegills

Wow! So are the fish in competition with the plant for bugs? If not how are they both getting so big? Neat stuff Jim.

Those particulr plants feed primarily on protozoa Brian. And only certain ones. But there must be a dump load of protozoa!Grass carp love that bladderwort and would grow quick in that pond. That plant is so fine stemmed i may get some crazy tropical fish like pacus to eat it when the water warms up.One of my clients owns Sun Pet,a wholesale tropical fish importer and has had me raise some crazy fish over the warm season. He tried to get me to put arowanas to grow them out. That thing eats monkeys off limbs! Not where i'm harvesting plants!

Love the idea of arrowanas! Maybe they can live and breed in your hothouses? With that warm spring feeding the ponds, they should do great.
RECIPE:
Bluegill fillets dipped in pancake mix made with Guiness Stout, pan fried in clarified butter.
Better than almost anything. Bluegill are some of the finest eating fish there is. Next time I want to add rice flour to the recipe to make a crispier crust.
