James these were rounded before I tumbled them. All the stones here were washed in from ancient rivers and floods. No jagged stone except large pet wood.A layer of these cover the whole formation we are on,underneath the topsoil layer where it meets the clay layer.

So those are local rocks?I am aware that the southern half of Texas is covered in water worn pebbles.Like the northern US washed down and covered you with all their jewels!Or at least west Texas/Mexico washed over to southeast Texas. The ones i found around Zapata had the white patina though. Why does yours not have a white coating?

James, from what I've read, the stones in our area were washed from the Eastern slopes of the rising Rocky Mountains to the Gulf of Mexico in ancient times. No patina hardly at all on these found here. All the wood is highly silicified, none agatized to speak of.There was more volcanic activity the further south you go from here, thus the difference in the wood. The wood from Live Oak county for instance is the same formation we are on,about 200 miles south, but much different. If you want more info, google Catahoula Formation.Interesting reading.

It's all amazing. And good not to have the patina.I studied uvalde gravel some.Over my head mostly. Now i will look into Catahoula formation. Here is a cool link www.texasbeyondhistory.net/coast/nature/images/gravels.htmlNotice the 2nd to the last paragraph discusses the alligator tumbler-yep,apparently Texas alligators had rock tumblers.Do you have an alligator Snuffy?

You west folks are so lucky to have those rocky washes.Dang Snuffy, a wild pack of rock hunters. Very interesting.I see a lot of non agate quartz in there too.I do not remember picking up any crystalline quartz on the RIO.

Great batch once again snuffy. Chrome like shine. I can't believe those are just laying around. Love the pic of your rockhounds ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I know you have posted your instructions before but if you don't mind me asking again- How long do you run in the lot-o with 1000 grit and are you using AO polish? Always love to see your tumbles. They are what I strive for Bill
