A water iris from bayou Lousiana country.Collection parties including the rich and famous collected these naturally occuring hybidizing iris a half a decade ago.The five 'original' crossed and made hundreds of different colors.Said to have naturally hybridized and made more colors than any flower in the wild,in the world.Nelsoni, brevacallis, gigantacurellia, hexagona uh fulva were the oiginal 5(so they say). The crosses were often related to territorial proximity of which one of the five were on which water way.The most enchanting wetlands ever.Loved my excursions and New Orleans.Blooms coming soon:> I mowed and 'shot' the pond edges.'shot'=killed w/round up.Got a battle with cut grass(Leersia Orzoides)mixing with the iris.Hopefully the iris will win.Cut grass does just that, but paper cuts and irritating beyond imagination Lousiana Iris 'Full Eclipse'.Color often called black I can't remember name Texas hybrids(Strawn) Probably a thousand named hybrids in every color except true red

About 20 opened today. They smell like cat urine-sorry-but are beautiful. Will wait till more open. You guys are patient-a lovely quality. This is another pond but covered w/Iris and California Bull Rush(Scirpus Californicus). The rush is darker green in the back.It gets humongo big.It has tall trees shading it and will bloom later due to shade. This pond is beginning a major transformation. The lotus are on the prowl.Notice the Gambusia(mosquito)minnows frothing in lower left. They follow me thinking i am getting in the water to harvest as i always do.It stirs up the water and provides them a meal. They are like mini piranha.

I have blue, pink, and yellow iris in my little pool. Is there anything I can fertilize them with?

Yes Curt. The best fertilizer in the world for underwater application/aquatics is Florikan(Nutricote).Home Depot sells it in a like 9 inch tube called Dynamite.Grey colored prills.Designed for growing rice.Has a polymer time release coating.Releases independent of moisture level-amazing.The fertilizer of the future x 10. You got to get it down to the roots Curt...

(True) red Iris do not exist. This Louisiana Iris is said to come closer to true red than any other of the many Iris varieties.A named LA Iris,'Top Notch' is out ther blooming and it is said to be as red as it gets.Iris Fulva is the native seed parent that gave it the red color. Photo taken today.Top Notch is 3 blooms on left.
