I've been dying to get out, but we keep getting slammed by late spring snow here.
I finally took off last night with my boys and left my wife home with our two girls. They had dances and shopping and movies to watch so we thought the guys needed to get out.
We made it to an area on state land near Marshall, WY around 9, and had a nice sunset on the drive in
Saw some windmills at dusk
The boys slept in the cab, we have an F250 with a crew cab so one got the front bench and one the rear. I slept in the bed and it got COLD last night. My 0 degree Fahrenheit sleeping bag didn't keep me warm so I barely slept. Fortunately there was no wind.
We got up early and after a little breakfast and warming up in the truck we started exploring. We picked up a lot of limestone that is very pretty up there, some partially metamorphised into a pretty pink/purple dendritic chert - but we were trying to find some that has a quartz druzy on it. It is really interesting because typically around here (or at least what I've been exposed to) we see calcite on limestone, but this stuff is 1/8" - 1/4" quartz points when we find it.
Anyhow we moved on to an area that has pet wood and started collecting our quota.
Matthew (5) found a nice piece
then he went about baning on all the sandstone in the area with a rock hammer
Corben (10) wandered off and loaded a bag full
Got a pic of the boys with the truck
I found some opal - I've seen it on the rocks up there but started finding tiny and then larger pieces
I also found some fossilized plant material, it looks like grass or leaves
Took an obligatory RTH sticker shot with some scenery
Corben with his haul, post cleaning
We had a great time and were home in time for dinner. It takes about 4 hours to get where we go, but these fast trips are fun other than me not getting enough sleep.
Thanks for looking!
