The quick story is:
Rented a car last minnit. by 3:00pm wed. last week we were loaded up and east on the 10 for Wiley's Well. After a food and ICE purchase in Coachella, (no Bugs Bunny, we MADE the left at Alberquerque... (<sp?)) we got to the well as the sun winked out. Did the road to the Hauser area in the dark. Parked on a good flat spot looking east, watched a UAV for awhile, ATE, got discouraged that the UV unit didn't light anything up, noticed there warent NO lights, even at the private properties along ashley flats. Played with the carbide lamp, and went to bed.
Thursday. Our original plan was to do the day at Hauser/Opal Hill Mine then blaze up the Desert Center route to Ludlow and spend the following day at Lavic. We got to digging, had some good early luck in the ashes, so we packed up and did a bit of the ashley flat road, but that wasn't a tickle, so we headed for the O.H.M.
The road was torture LAST visit. We had a AWD Subaru. This time we were stuck with a FWD Captiva. The size of a SUV, with a 4banger. Opal Hill road was out of the question. We went part way, to where it is still possible to get back out, had some lunch and started walking. Had lotsa luck AGAIN! Never reached the mine, got chalcedony, and lacey stuff, couple fire agates in the wash... except, WHOOPS, wifey had no water, and my spray bottle had apparently been used with soap. (I am a camel today) With huge pockets bulging, we head for the car, about a half-3/4 mile out. I go ahead at doubletime, get to the car, haul a$$ back to the lil woman and put her in the shade and make her drink.
A second reminder of our last trip, BUZZING! Bee hive in the next tree. We BOOT SCOOT AND HAUL BUNS! Back at the car we are giggling, happy with the haul. We jump in the car and head for LUDLOW. 170 miles, nonstop, desert backroads. got to Lavic with about a half hour of light. Got a bunch of Jasper, it got DARK! I got miffed that the UV light didn"t get any glow, double checked it, working really good. What the HECK? Jump in the car and go Lavic to Brea nonstop. Get a few bucks for the early return of the car, Drooled over the rocks all weekend. WHOOO-HOOO! Gonna score a 4X4 and get back to Wiley before it gets too HOT!!!
