I lost a good friend a couple years ago. I've been a big brother to his 2 sons since they were little and we are all friends now. The oldest and his wife are great friends with my wife and I.
I used to take this guy fishing whenever we could and we loved it. We talked last year about going on a fly-fishing vacation and taking our wives since they like each other.
We settled on going to Roatan, renting a private home and doing our best to find as much non-tourist stuff as we could, in addition to hiring a fly-fishing guide to show us around.
We had an awesome time. We ended up meeting a couple local guys and talked them into renting a buddy's boat and taking us fishing with them for a day.
Here is just a bunch of pics. It was an awesome time.
flying over Belize
My buddy and the fly guide:
mangrove channels between fishing villages
homes along the water
my buddy spotting fish
the fly fishing outfitter's HQ and several guest bungalows
on the boat with the 2 local guys we met
me and one of the local guys - Pelon
we headed out to fish for the day right at dawn, on a stormy day
we stumbled on a pod of dolphins and chased them around in the boat, they would jump in front of us as we went, very cool time
we rode out to some deserted islands to fish and snorkel
a new island forming on the reef
the water really was beautiful everywhere we went
one of the local guys invited me along as he spearfished
my camera didn't do it justice, but the reef was the most beautiful I've seen in my life
this coral was taller than me
spearfishing haul
got caught in a squall
the guys caught a barracuda
the guys dropped off my buddy to fish a flat near the end of the day and went to a local fishing village to pick up some snacks
they caught a bunch of conch (bottom) that they eat
picking up my buddy
some of the nearby islands near days' end
my buddy near sunset
local lizard
roadside iguana
out of order, but this is one of the guys we went fishing with selling me fresh lobsters at the pier by the house
a fresh lobster and shrimp dinner I made for us
eating dinner
my buddy and I making breakfast
flowers in our yard
breakfast
me paddling out to snorkel the white sand from our house
inside the place we rented
dawn from our porch
the back of the house
our wives in the pool behind our house
getting ready to head home
greeted with a snowstorm when we returned
we had an amazing time. We opted for non-touristy things and were able to take a fairly reasonably-priced trip by doing a lot ourselves. We're trying to plan out next adventure, hopefully not too many years away!
