I find this picture shocking. Check out the lake beside Vagas. What once was beach front is now what looks like a mile walk. Islands are now land locked. More images of the world here. world.time.com/timelapse/

Vegas uses tons and tons and tons of water... in the middle of the desert... I wonder how long they can keep it up before draining that whole area dry...

Yeah, I was talking with some growers on the east side of the Sierras and all those Nevada aquifers are in terrible shape too and those particular ones take tens of thousands of years to recharge....Mel

That's a shame.Man's gotta have water though.Do the calaculations and then stop populating. You can't pull it out of your buttocks. One river(and a few small ones) feeding one lake-hello!Can't be that complicated. We have the same problem Georgia vs Florida vs Alabama-WHO GETS THE WATER from the Chattahochee River{auto-correct: MOV files not allowed}e down to helen's area. It's the only place i ever go that has crystal clear drinking water coming out of holes in the earth at millions of gallons per day.All over the place. And that's not global warming-that is to much mankind in the desert. What were they thinking. Now the lake will really dry up as the shallows heat up.Hoover Dam-one of the 7 wonders-whooda thunk

It's a shame, and the only thing that stops this kind of thing are the Greenies. Yet everyone hates the greenies. Go figure? James, Florida's aquifer is under assault too... finance.yahoo.com/news/pf_article_111186.htmlCentral Florida is actually in the top 10 cities that are at risk for running out of water already. Guess what other city is in the top 10? Atlanta. Read the article. We have been on lawn water rationing for many many years... the price of sinking our aquifer is sinkholes and collapse of land... We can use greenies here as badly as Vegas, but neither Georgia nor Florida are particularly interested. At least not til many many more homes sink into holes in the dirt. Unfortunately, it's coming.

The greenies also don't protest all the terraforming of California. Before millions of people moved out there southern Cali was all desert - now look at all the green lawns...
How much water is wasted trying to turn desert into suburbia?

Toad, has it occurred to you that there simply aren't enough Greenies to take on every single thing that perhaps should be protested?

greenies aren't REALLY greenies. We live in deserts we need water and food. Greenies live in deserts, they need water and food.
No, they claim to be green because it is a charismatic thing to say. People like the idea of being environmentally conscientious. But in reality what greenies do is sponsor and enact laws to empower government to shrink your freedoms.
Short term it sorta looks good. "Wilderness area" means no modern vehicles on the land. Very difficult to visit. Marine Conservation Areas fence off portions of the ocean to prevent fishermen from "overfishing". It also prevents scuba diving because that "disturbs the breeding cycles of the marine organisms".
In the not too distant future, we will have nobody enjoying nature in any way, any activity or endeavor. It will be illegal. It will be difficult. It will be socially unacceptable. Once that is accomplished nobody will REALLY TRULY care about the environment. Then the "greenies" true and extraordinarily well hidden goal will be achieved.
The end result of the environmental movement is total annhilation of nature.
edited to add: Once nobody cares, nature and the environment can be destroyed without a fight.

On what basis did you come up with this statement Scott?
And what are you saying? That no one should be environmentally conscious or do anything about it, because environmental groups aren't 'real', so should be ignored?
And that will lead to a LESSENING of the destruction of the environment, our water supply... how?

Well, I actually agree that 'greenies' in general are focused on the wrong things. I think the reason for this may be that they feel it's more important to bring not so crucial environmental issues to the forefront, so people are more aware of them?
While I consider myself an 'environmentalist', it's a pretty lose term, since I don't belong to any environmental groups. I don't like some of the misguided intense focus on smaller issues, some of which are outright detrimental to people. Yet I'm very aware of and disgusted by things like the wasting of drinking water, or the causing of sinkholes all over the US by unnecessary reduction of underwater rivers and lakes for watering lawns.
Or random killing of wildlife and fishing/shrimping industries providing food, because we allowed oil companies to drill in the middle of millions of people's food supplies. Or oil spills across people's backyards and across their already reduced drinking water sources.
Or ignoring climate change, because while everyone sees plenty of climate change, the erroneous belief that climate change ONLY means warming temperatures, so we shouldn't worry about it, leads to a dangerous complacency that can affect our entire environment.
What can we do about that? Not a whole lot except to appreciate that we all live in the same dirty fishbowl, and lettings others pee and poop in it may not help any of us in the long run.

Speaking of environmentalists... when the Republicans win is when they start selling off our national parks to people for exploitation. Having been to Death Valley and the Grand Canyon lately, more than any other time, I'm aware of the need for FEDERAL protection of these lands. To imagine that no one will ever be able to drive through the majesty of one of these parks again, because some oil driller thinks they can make $50 a barrel of oil and the entire region fenced off from anyone wanting to go see it ever again is disgraceful to me. And Republicans want to start selling off our national parks... so that we can NEVER go see these sights again because 1. they will be destroyed. 2. they will be covered with oil rigs and/or bulldozers and/or cranes... UGH. And that's what the Congressional Republicans are fighting to do. Sell our parks to Ted Turners to fence off completely, oil companies to drill, or developers to build on. thinkprogress.org/climate/2012/03/21/449046/gop-budget-calls-for-fire-sale-of-public-lands-while-preserving-40-billion-in-tax-breaks-to-big-oil/THIS is what you guys are voting for. WHY?

There is no such thing as a greenie;the only greenie that can help us is a green martian. It is truly a Pollyanna figurine. It exists in the mind of politicians therefore a veeeeeeeeeery Pollyanna figurine. That is a fact. No green person(s) will save this earth.
