I have no idea what kind of rock this is but think it might look good tumbled and polished. Maybe even shaped somehow. Anyone know what it is? Attachments:

The 1st looks like Chinese writing stone, but the crystals seem more course than fine. If the dark background is not pitted, it does polish nicely.

Deb, I believe you're right. I think it is Chinese Writing Stone too. I managed to split off some pieces and the color is darker inside with the white squares/rectangles. That will be the next object going into the tumbler. I wish I could find someone with a saw so I could get some slabs made from the large chunk I still have left untouched. I think it could make some beautiful pendants, rings or bracelets.
I have several other rocks in my pile that I have broke open with a 2 pound hammer and they too have some colors (not a lot) and some designs. Unfortunately I am now retired and just don't have the money to buy any of the expensive saws and other equipment to do the job right. Bummer!

before we go off identifying this as "chinese writing stone" can you provide us with some provenance? How did you come about owning this stone? Did you buy it? Collect it from a river? #1 looks like it could simply be granite and #2 is almost certainly fornikite. Please tell us more.
