I think it's calcite crystals, we have small areas that have lots of it...nothing grows well there and some smell like sulphur... Would be cool to know what it is and why that happens only in small areas.. Attachments:

could be quartz too. Put some pool acid on it and see if it fizzes.
Fizzing = calcite in general
sulfur?? = yucky!
Actually sulfur point to a sulfate mineral. Perhaps others here can advise on the possibly of it being a sulfate crystal.

LOL, I'm more interested in the matrix rock. Looks like fossiliferous limestone. Was this collected in Kansas ? If so, it's probably calcite. Even plain old white vinegar should make it fizz. or a few drops of coke.

It's to soft to be quartz, so I know it's not that. I forgot about seeing if it fizzes , I'll check that out. I do have some sulfuric acid , and vinegar... the crystals don't have a sulphur smell at all. Just some ares it's found around... I'd also like to know how these small areas formed , what geology is behind this sporadic patches of odd minerals...? One place "hells half acre" I think used to have some small geodes all over it. I haven't been sense I was a kid ... I should go get some pictures of it...
