I don't know if you all realize or not how great you all are. You are very generous with your help and advise. You share your pictures and parts of your lives, your ups and downs. I log on in the morning and always leave with a smile and a new lesson learned. I have been a rocker since I was knee high to a grasshopper as my auntie would say. I belong to a local rock club that is dying on the vine due to no new blood. It used to be a big club in the area. I am just wondering if anyone has any idea's on how to get some life in it. This forum proves there is interest, must be the people that keep it alive.

For my 0.02 cents worth, have some things for kids, maybe divided by age groups. Demos, maybe make things with some tumbled rocks, have a tumbler going, maybe some cabbing going on. This would help them get interested, then one night have them bring there parents so they can see. If you can get the kids interested, they can help get the parents interested. One night if you can slice some geodes or thunder eggs open.
Just some ideas, Charles

Check with your local schools. See if the science teacher would be interested in having your club put on displays and talks about local rocks and minerals. Maybe see about organizing field trips to near by places of geological interest, where the kids could collect their own specimens. Also see if your club members would be willing to sponsor a junior rockhound division of your club. Find members who would be willing to mentor young members. Old and dieing clubs can be revived, but it has to start with us old goats being willing to work with kids, and local teachers being willing to help spark an interest in their students.
If you need specimens to show or even share with the kids, ask on this forum. Our members are very generous. And especially so when it comes to teaching kids about our great hobby.

We are a constantly growing club of about 275 - 300 members and our method of continuing to grow involves a significant involvement of the local schools from grade school through junior college. We have a member that has developed a geology refresher program for the 4th and 5th grade level. The schools teach geology in the fourth grade but they are tested by the state in the 5th grade. She goes into the schools and teaches her refresher program just prior to the testing and it significantly increases the overall test scores for the schools. They love that. She has exposure to many hundreds of students throughout the school year. As a result she is allowed to have our club show flyer (a glossy color postcard showing all about what can be seen at the show) distributed to about 20 schools in the area (all classes). We get about 50,000 fliers distributed each year. This brings many kids (with paying parents) to our show. Many of those students and parents become new members. We have a very active junior program just before the adult monthly club meeting. For the last 40 years we have been very actively supporting lapidary and silversmithing classes at the local junior college (Modesto Junior College). The instructors are members of our club. We provide much of the equipment for the courses as well as do all the maintenance of the machines. We get about 4 or 5 new members from each semester's classes. At our last show in May we had about 4800 paying admissions and about 3400 children coming to our show. We had 22 new members sign up to join the club at the show. Focus on the schools all the way from grade school to junior college and beyond and your club WILL GROW! Bob President Mother Lode Mineral Society

Thanks everyone for the idea's and advise. Now I gotta get busy. I have an elementary school within my housing development. I was just imagining how much fun I would have going in and doing show and tell.
