If you saw Shotgunner's report on his AZ trip last weekend you'll recall Tim and I located a nice chunk of "Worm Track" rock up on the steep cliffs at the first site we visited (same area Scott found the black rattler). We worked on it for about an hour before we finally left, vowing to return. Well this morning we returned! Spent another hour taking turns pounding freshly sharpened chisels with Tim's hammer until we finally got enough material removed around it to make it pop out! Tim went down the hill and I rolled it on down to him Here it is on Tim's tailgate, awesome!! We made a second trip out there today but I don't feel like getting in to that right now lol. Thanks for looking!

That's cool!! Are you keeping it as a specimen or are you gonna cab it up? (can it be cabbed?)

Wow that is really odd stuff. I couldn't find out much about it. Is it a travertine/limestone type material? Really like the colonial looking aspect of the smaller tunnels....Mel

That stuff looks like a limestone to me, but googling Beef's word "tigillite" tells that it is a diaspore. The place sure does look limestoney.

Looking down on Tim. I was from approximately where he is was when I took the picture looking up. Rattlesnake was located under the bluish bush to the left of the image. I was just behind the fence seen behind Tim, looking up, reverse perspective.

If it is not track it looks like long slender funnels that branch into finer and finer capillaries.Unique design.Anenomes,Sponge?Algae, fungus, bryozoanGuessing the capillaries serve as root/attachment.An unmistakable fingerprint.Probably aquatic. The tapered/funneled shape w/branching does not seem like a track.

One of my favorite things about this site is it gives one a chance to see all kinds of new and interesting materials collected, cut, and even cabbed. Collectively, the information this site provides is better than the best rock book you could ever have. I've been a rockhound for over fifty years and it's totally awesome that time after time you folks show me something new and exciting....Mel

Adrian if it's a limestone or marble that would put the hardness at 3-4, right? Though after pounding it out of there I'd just say it's hard as hell ;D I'm surely confusing hardness with toughness.
Thanks James, a lot of interesting possibilities!
Mel I agree, and RTH is fortunate to have you and your vast knowledge of rock identifications here with us.
