I just heard in another forum that MotleyJewels in Baldwinsville NY (just outside Syracuse) is closing down sometime in the next few weeks. They concentrate on N. American gem rocks, mostly finished items, and are running 50% off until the doors close (first come, first served). For anyone in or passing through, the address is on their website. It saddens me to hear of shops like this having to close. They seem to get far fewer and further between every year. Wish I were near enough to get there.

Hard for a brick and mortar business to compete with Amazon and other on line cut rate distributors. I recently heard from a shop owner that demonstrates equipment for customers who then walk out if he won't match Amazon's prices. He also said people paw through his books and if they like them they use their smart phones and take a picture of the stock number so they can order on line. Hard to pay rent and other over head expenses that way.

You are probably correct. One wonders what people will do once all the shops are closed. How will they learn about the choices and drawbacks? How will they judge quality (it is usually impossible to judge rock quality by a picture) and get a hands-on look? Who at Amazon will help them when they have a question? I suppose we'll find out what we've lost after we've saved a few cents and found the true cost of the "convenience." Shows may take up some of the slack, but local shops are a treasure that I've long since begun to to miss.
