These shoals in the Withlacoochee River are whole silicified/fossilized coral reefs. The roundish island on the left is about 100 feet across. It is loaded w/botyroidal gravel and psuedomorphs for those willing to do certain things. The whole bottom of the river for at least 1000 feet in both directions is the same reef. The thickness of the silicifications varies from 1 to 3 feet thick.Coral heads from 1 inch to 6 feet accross.6 inchers about average.I collect all i can get on about 1/1000 or less of this little stretch. There are miles and miles of such reef under this and many other rivers.A good bit of variety over this 300 mile long fossil bed. These shoals are rich in ancient artifacts.Scrapers, points, grinding stones, chipped material from making artifacts.Because the shoals were few and far between, they were heavy influence on travel routes. The road bridge upsrteam is built on 'Rocky Ford';serving as a crossing for ancients, frontiersman and modern vehicles. They probably bathed and relaxed on these shoals. So many butchering tools like scrapers and bone bashers;they had to have cleaned their kills here. At Rocky Ford, the chips from making ancient artifacts are 3-4 feet thick.Stained by 100's of years of exposure to the mineral rich water.A fairly reliable dating technique. Fan paddling the water over these chip piles while looking thru dive mask exposes myraid of colors.Filling a 50 pound capacity tumbler with fracture free chips and chunks is a 10 minute job. goo.gl/maps/LD7np

The next bridge is 15 miles.Lots of shoals to pull your ride across. It is a lot of work for a one day trip in a kayak. If you do not run into a growth of hyacinths, blocking any kayak.
