So, after finishing up all the projects, it was time to start something new. Had seahorses on my mind for some time now and its time to give it a shot. First up are those two: Palm with a lot of prominent plumes, hardness differs a lot between colors. And a Chrysocola to practice shape That thing is incredibly hard, just preshaping used up 7 burrs, and I mean there is not a grain of material left on the burrs, they are completely used up. The palm is relatively soft and I promised a seahorse to Brooks, so I needed to get a feel for the material, so I decided to start with this one in the first place. But in the end, the whole exercise is for this piece. The last one top start as it will have to involve different kind of cutting-methods. While the head will need to be raised, the rest of the body needs to have only the ribs/lines raised. So thats where I'm thus far Have a great weekend, Kurt

Hi there, it looks like I got lucky with one of them where everything already seems to work out better than expected. First up; hard as hell Chrysocolla from Indonesia and I was just told yesterday that it might classify as Gemsilica The other two are of Palm with a strange plume assembly, also from Indonesia and might be classified as one of the Pawancawa types. This one is for Krystee. Its far behind as the other two where intended to be practice rounds for this one. But it looks like this will be the star of the 3. Somehow, color, texture and shape just seem to fall in place the right way. And lastly a quick iPhone picture from this afternoon to give you a sense of size So that should keep me busy for at least another 5 to 6 days. Best regards, Kurt

You operate on a higher level Kurt. Not really. Just like new challenges and get bored easily. In short: a jack of all trades and master of none.

Finally all done. Will not show the 3rd. one yet as it will go out to the US this week, and should be somewhat of a surprise. I'm still fibbing around with it, as I'm worried about the polish not being up to the fatastic standard that the queen of shine is used to. hide35 saved12 bricks21 OK, so here we go: First up is a bit of a disaster, but in hindsight might just about elevate it from just a carving to an actual piece of jewelery. Broke the tail in literally the last minutes of carving, now it will be replaced by either silver or a golden one (when I got the money) and I think that this will improve it to a level that I myself can not yet reach. 4 x 3 cm 53 ct But my new all time favorite is this one(have been wearing it already the whole week) lol15 Pawancawara Plume from Daniel, presumed a palm fossil. In any case, plumes of various kind within agate. 3 colors, 3 different hardness's. And a closeup of the 3 layers Next up, I need to find inspiration for a miner for Warren. A project that is long overdue. In the meantime, I think I will have a try at those two at 4 cm colour lenght, this is a purple monster And this one is smaller but the colors are going to be eye candy Lots of extra material on both, but don't know yet what to do with it. The second one does resemble somewhat a tail of a mermaid, so might give that a shot. One thing is sure, since I started looking at them with intend to carve, I do not want to just cut out the color any more. There is much more to be had in those things. As always, any and all suggestions are more than welcome, best regards, Kurt

Awesome. Better awesome than before. The three color is very hard to achieve in any size but to do it that small puts you up very close to the top. Three color is only achieved by few in China so it is highly regarded. You have really impressed me and I am sure it will impress a lot of others. Jim

Unfortunately Jim, I cant claim that honor. You presume that the colors are on top of each-other, but actually they are in rings, with the darkest at the center. So all I did is cut through 3 successive rings.
Cameo as such is still years away, but I'm on the lookout for material that would give me the layers to work with. Got some addresses in Germany for companies supplying Idar Oberstein, but tis stuff is still out of my budget.
Something like your Avatar, should be very much suited for those mulch-colored cameos.
