Hello! I've been picking up rocks all of my life. I think that the defining moment regarding rock collecting as a hobby happened when I was about eight years old. My Great Grandmother showed me a gray enamel bowl filled with water and Lake Superior agates that had been collected at sometime in the 1920s. I only saw them once, and no one has ever said where they went, but they were the most beautiful, stunning rocks I had ever seen. From that moment on, the search was on for agates.
After years of looking, it wasn't until decades later that I actually found agates in the U.P. and that only occurred after my husband and I took an agate hunting lesson from Karen Bryz, the owner and curator of the Gitchee Gumme Agate Museum. Ironically enough, I have recently found plentiful agates in the lower peninsula in gravel pit glacial till. I belong to a local rock club that has a cutting and grinding room and I spent most of last summer there creating cabs. I'm hoping to spend the summer this year learning how to cut and polish Fordite cabs, and I found this forum while searching the internet for materials and processing tips.
You have an amazing wealth of information regarding everything having to do with the lapidary arts here and I'm looking forward to spending a good deal of time in this forum.

Thanks for the welcome, everyone! We're in Warren. Just a quick 20 minutes or so away from "the Joe." I'm looking forward to spending lots of time here this summer learning new things.

I am in sterling heights so we are neighbors. not sure if you are already know this but there is a rock club not too far from you. they teach classes on tumbling, cabbing, faceting, wire wrapping and all kinds of good stuff. plus after taking a class you can go on open lapidary day and use there stuff.

Antarestch, welcome to the club from another Michigander! I stopped in Karen's shop a couple times last summer. We didn't take a class, but spent some time talking with her. I haven't found my first agate yet, but my son found a little one in Grand Marais. I found what I thought was an agate in Petoskey, while looking for Petoskey stones, but someone told me that he was pretty sure that it was banded chert. It doesn't look like banded chert to me, but he knows more than I do. In a couple weeks, I'm heading back up to the Keweenaw Peninsula to visit my sister and she is taking me to a remote place that she heard has lots of great rocks. I can't wait.

Rocks and Hockey, a good mix. Too bad the Wings didn't take out the Blackhawks!
