Hi! I'm new to this forum and just inherited a few boxes of jasper and don't know where to start! I was thinking of tumbling some and polishing a few 5mm slices of the larger pieces. Not sure if I'm on the right path for this type of rock! (usually work with quartz, opal and sulphides!) Any help appreciated! Thanks, Tre

Hi kk - they're currently in storage at my aunts, I can get photos in a week or two when i pick them up. The biggest are fist size with most being smaller and light brown in colour.

Any with interesting pattern will make nice tumbles, slabbetts, or cabs. jasper is hard 6.5 to 7.9 MOHS and thus takes a good shine.
Some softer materials are sometimes called jasper to highlight that it is opaque and not translucent like agate. These will polish less well, with some taking satin shine, and some having flat spots or undercutting.
Generally the plain brown ones are of little interest.
If you have the tools to tumble or slice, or want to make some entry-level purchases (with entry-level expectations/limitations) a lot can be done with a tile saw and/or a 6lb rotary or small vibe tumbler. You could get a few basic pieces of equipment for $120 to $400.
This may exceed the value of your rocks given it is just one box. What is the sentimental importance? What is the interest in continuing to work with jasper and/or agates?

Thanks Daniel!
I might have a good look at them when I pick them up and sort them into whether they might be worth playing with or just sell/donate as rough!

I could see a couple cut in half but most haven't been touched yet.
I changed the avatar to show box #1 (photos coming from my aunt) - I'll get to have a good look soon!
