I have found places saying it is Chinese and I have seen it called from the US. Confused....

I think it is a Chinese Dolomite. TheGemShop has it listed in the Asia section. possibly the term is being used generically for some US rock?

I understood it to be an argillite or siltstone type material very much like Indian paint Rock from death valley. Basically a lithified ooze with iron and manganese inclusions and dendrites. Supposed to be from Guangxi Province, China where they are called "grass and flower stone"...Mel

I'd be inclined to believe the Gemshop before the other two. Eloxite misidentifies tons of stuff badly. Chinese Crinoidal Limestone for example they call jasper. Matter of fact, they seem to use jasper for a lot of stuff *L*
I got my information from a search on Chinese Picture Jasper which goes under a host of names. After seeing your picture of the carvings, I'm wondering if we're dealing with multiple materials under the same trade name. I've only seen the paintbrush in semi-polished slab form mounted on wood stands and it definitely looked like an argillite but your carving pictures sure do look like dolomite marble....Mel

multiple materials with similar dendrite is possible. I handled some rough at thegemshop, and it felt like a dolomite. I thought all the viewing stones were a limestone though.
