Geez... that is horrible beyond belief. In Florida we have a sex offender registry that anyone can go look at, complete with pictures, crime committed, and their exact address. It is mandatory to register, and they have no choice. I just looked it up, and Alaska has one too. You can punch in your zip code and it should tell you where all sex offenders are in your zip code: dps.alaska.gov/sorweb/sorweb.aspxThese do no good if people don't use them, but what normal person spends their time looking up sex offenders in their area? In Florida, someone like that who committed a crime against a child probably would not see the light of day for decades, but Florida is pretty unique in the US for the length and diligence of locking criminals up. Rape and battery of a minor is a minimum 9 year sentence to life. And here, they don't get much time off for any reason at all. We had some horrific crimes in the last decade or so that made our laws against sexual offenders some of the toughest in the US. I hope this terrible crime does that for Alaska too, so at least some innocents can be spared. What a horrible tragedy.

My thought is that they need to serve more time - maybe indefinitely. I don't believe in registries. If we still don't trust the people they need to stay locked up. Once they are out of jail they should be able to move on with their lives, or what is the point. This is not said to downplay their crimes, but if they have not served their debt, keep them locked up. Even if it is a life sentence. Releasing and tracking is not fair to anyone: vicitm, perp, society...

No lists, no prison......Castrate'em, Hang'em, and leave their carcasses hanging on a barbed wire fence with a sign saying what they done......Mel Geoff's case is obvious and Mel's solution works for me. Society disagrees with Mel, but I will not. The registry laws started out good. The issue I have is when someone takes a leak and gets charged with a sex crime and is then registered for life. A 16 year old take her bra off snaps a pick, sends it to her boyfriend and they both go to jail and are sex offenders for life. Him busted for nothing more than having received the image. Even if he immediately deleted it. An 18 year old boy is convicted of statutary rape for being with his 17 year 6 month old girlfriend. Before his birthday it was ok, for a six month window until her 18th birthday it is not. That is silly. In general, registry = best we can do, some cases registry has overstepped it's bounds. Mel lives in the wild west. Back in the olden days if someone caught another raping or molesting they would have simply killed him on the spot. No need for a trial or a jail or a registry. Problem solved. Another case where having more guns is good.

Yeah, I should not have generalized. I was thinking of actual violent criminal cases like rapes, abductions, adult child molestations, extreme sexual battery etc. Statutory cases need to be evaluated individually as to age and circumstance etc. The bad ones, it's the barbed wire fence for them...Mel

The unfortunate thing is that sex offenders don't get "cured", they are that way for life so offender registries are a necessary thing to protect our society. I agree with Mel do away with them because if they get out of prison they will be back at predating our children. Bob

Yeah, that's what makes this case so different. This isn't some neighbor or family friend or relative. This was some random dude that busted in, killed half the family and raped the other half. No registry in the world could have helped them. But, at the same time, we have to stay with in the bounds of our current legal system. In Alaska, it's packed full of drunks and domestic abusers. If i remember right, we are on the top of the list when it comes to alcohol abuse, near the top for domestic violence, near the top for rape, and near the top for STDs. We obviously have a problem that the current legal system can't fix.
BTW the great grandmother died yesterday.

I answered this question: "My question for you all is, how was he already out of jail already, having just assaulted an 11 year old girl? It seems to be a depressing trend up here, repeat offenders who serve next to no time victimizing more people. Is it like this where you live?"
Was talking about how it is in Florida, and what we do to someone who molested an 11 year old (not let them out very soon).
For the crime you posted, I agree with Mel. Problem is making sure you got the right guy before you did it, and it only applying to violent felons that qualify for a life sentence.
But we all know that won't happen, nor would my brilliant idea of bringing back gladiator games to the death, using the most violent in jail to save taxpayer dollars housing and feeding them. Then sell tickets to the events for the benefit of the US treasury. Hey, if Spain can have bullfights... lots of people would buy tickets to see your guy get mauled by another sicko.
Getting rid of the sex offender registration is foolish, because you already know they DO get released, and without it, they can live next to an elementary school or get a job at a daycare.

Two thoughts for sex offenders, and especially those who rape children. # 1 -- A very large treble hook & # 2 -- A stout branch about 10' off the ground.

They were born with 'bad wiring'. It's understandable to hate them but at the end of the day we're just sophisticated machines and something got screwed up really bad along the way. It can't be fixed so they have to go.

Number one,I agree with Mel!!! Having seen and been around sexually abuse, one thing I do know,is there isn't a cure in the world that will stop these freakin' PERVERTS! My cousin and several other girls were molested in school many years ago by the school janitor,he got off scot free,he still lived in town, but was shunned,no friends,no life at all! He should have gotten prison! When I was a kid in the 60's (a great time to be a kid),we had a new guy move into town and decided to be molesting girls too,but before the police got ahold of him,a few guys took him out into the hills(Montana) and broke both his legs and one arm!!!!! He did jail time too, than left the country! On the other side of the coin,my Nephew was 18 years old dating a 17 year old and got her pregnant, they were going to get married, but he backed out instead and made an agreement that he would take care of the child financially...The parents didn't like the agreement and turned him in for statuary rape and recieved 18 months in the Washington State prison system! Also had to registor as a sex offender! In his honor,he and his son are tight! He holds down a job and is a great guy,but he made a mistake! Now these perverts that totally do this crazy crap like raping old ladies and children and are at 100% guilty, need a slow torture, hard labor 15 hours a day.....No book,no TV,no nothing!!! In my honest opinion,I say shoot the waste of human flesh on the spot and save us taxpayers money and court costs and prison housing!!!! If I ever caught someone doing that to any of my grandchildren,I would blow them away with a shotgun!!! While living in North Dakota,I was called to Jury duty, the Lawyers ask you questions before they select a booth full of people. The guy had molested two little girls..When it came time to question me,I looked his Lawyer in the eyes and flat out told him, that his client was guilty as hell(exact words)in my opinion! He looked at me than the Judge, the Judge said "You may be excused from this trial" and I walked out.. His client gave me a glare that could of cut steel! LOL..The guy got three years in the ND State prison for sexual abuse!(only three years, can you believe that)!

I went to school with a guy who, in 1976 at 19 was convicted of raping a 12 yo. He hung himself in his cell his first night, knowing what would happen when he was released to the general prison population.
Fast forward to nowadays, the pervs are so common and the prison system is so focused on protecting them that they don't carry the stigma anymore. Too bad.
Fossil, I say the shotgun is way too quick and painless.
