The Prineville Rockhound Pow Wow starts Thursday June 20 and runs through the 23rd (more information click here). The Madras Pow Wow begins June 26th and runs through the 30th (more information click here). Aside from many vendors at the shows, there will be also be field trip digs during both shows on normally off-limits private ranches. Both are large, among the oldest around and well worth the trip for a day or two of pawing through rocks from all over. It looks like Elkins Gems (on the west side of the fairgrounds where the Prineville Pow Wow is held) will reopen again for a few days during the Pow Wow to sell off what remained after last summer. I went over to see her today and there is still some nice stuff, though a great deal is gone, including some of the shop's specialties like Deschutes and vistaite. In a quick look around, there was still some Maury Mt., GP, eggs and other good cutting material. Judy says the discounts will be steep as she is looking put the land up for sale – and it is a prime commercial location for a restaurant or something other than a rock shop. Those famous huge piles have dwindled mightly, though I saw enough nice material from all over Oregon, Washington and Nevada that would make it easy to get several sacks full in an hour's digging, as I hope to get a chance to do. For those who will be in the area, both shows are well worth a visit and free (though there is a nominal charge if you want to go along on the sponsored digs).
