The whole purpose of the Taliban's 9/11 attacks were to topple the U.S. by destroying our economy. They sat back and waited for just the right time to attack for maximum effect. And the negative economical effects from the Global Free Trade agreements of the 1990s followed by Alan Greenspan's attempt to use interest rates to reset the stock market gave the Taliban the window of opportunity they had been waiting for. So here we are now, and as I see it, any further fighting on the Taliban's part would be pointless and they know it. The U.S. economy has been destroyed and the U.S. is in mid-fall. All the Taliban has to do now is stand back and wait for the final crash. They've already won. Most of us just haven't realized that yet. This is exactly how the Soviet Union came to an end and we've marched into the same trap.

How does blowing up one bldg. cause the US economy of 360 million people to go into freefall? Isn't that like saying if you ruin your favorite pair of shoes, you will lose your job?

Helen, my take on it is this: If it is not self evident to you already, no amount of explanation will cause you to understand that statement. Ever. I will disagree with my amigo QuailRiver on one point. I do not think his economics observation is/was "the whole purpose" of the attacks. I do not believe they are smart enough to have thought in such an intricate manner. My take is they set out to attack us with planes crashing into buildings. They got lucky and succeeded in grand fashion. Did they envision the entirety of the results? I doubt they even expected the buildings to collapse and everything after that was spice on the hummus.

Helen, Surely you can't be so unintuitive as to not realize the ensuing costs of our government borrowing trillions of dollars to finance two wars against terrorism, and to create and maintain the TSA and DHS. Which ALL resulted from the 9/11 attacks? Not to mention the billions lost in the private sector as a result of 9/11. If so, I'm sorry but I can't think of a corresponding "shoe" scenario to yours that will help explain but not sound ridiculous or belittle reality. So maybe this will link will help. abcnews.go.com/Blotter/osama-bin-laden-wanted-911-follow-doom-economy/story?id=16201299#.Ud3IdW36XQIP.S. And by the way, the population of the U.S. is 316 million, not 360 million. And it was three buildings attacked, not "one" (Two World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon).

Boy...those pictures really give some humanity to Afghanistan and the Afghan people.
How senseless is war? To give up the lives you see in those pictures , for what?
and Kabul would have been a very scenic place to vacation in another time, wouldn't it (especially if we could look for real Lapis Lazuli)

Ok, so I guess we've fallen apart, nevermind that we are in recovery. I guess next stop in the USA is Somalia, and look, we're almost there! Good grief.

FUBAR
For the first time in nearly 30 years, this 4th my flag stayed inside. Besides, one could be targeted as a patriot for displaying patriotism these days.

Independence Day. . . if our fore-bearers could see how the government is systematically removing all vestiges of independence from the people I suspect they would feel the same. Hello, patriots targeted by government. . .
I will still fly it on Veteran's Day.
