What an intense variety that range must have! Even more impressive is your knowledge of the entire west! That first plume is a delight. Bill

*L* Randy, I was much younger when I carried that one out across about a mile of sand and gravel on my back. And it had sharp edges too *L*....Mel

Plumes & moss always get my attention! A couple of weeks ago I spent an hour in Afton Canyon near the campground & went a bit south into one of the canyons by the train bridge, but didn't find anything. Where should I look? Lynn

Scott, The Cady's are so extensive and there are so many canyons there that I've actually been unable to find certain canyons full of goodies that were within a mile of my camp *L* The worse case was one little hanging canyon near the Pepto Bismol Hill campsite. Walked up a little group of canyons not all that far from my truck, and found the best moss I've ever found in that part of the Cady's. Hauled a packful back to the truck, had lunch and was unable to find the dang canyon again in three more trips *L*. I'm a good tracker but dang those rocky canyons don't show tracks *L*
Lynn, The easiest place to hunt must be hit after a good flood on the Mojave River. If you go south on Basin road from Hwy 15 ( about 45 miles east of Barstow) you keep to the left fork, the sandy one, till you hit the RR tracks. Don't follow the good gravel road to the right towards the mountains as you'll get out of agate country. Once you're at the tracks, all the gravel beds in that part of the canyon have good quartz gems but they get covered by sand so you need to have the gravel exposed for good hunting. The sites further back in across the tracks, need multiple four by fours to be safe and are probably about a forty minute four wheeling drive in and some of the little side trails are flat out horrible. You'd need a guide that knew the area to find a site like the Fluorite mine. The pink hill we called Pepto Bismol is pretty easy to find as it's right off the Mojave trail but it's way back in there. Most the areas near the campground have been hunted out for years, especially since the advent of quads and trailbikes. Actually, the Cady's have been incredibly pillaged since the advent of E-Bay. I've probably told this story before but one trip we hiked so far back into the hills we couldn't even pack out more than a few pounds cause it was such a bad hike. We found a canyon full of good agate and jasper but someone blabbed about it. Next trip, someone had cut a truck trail in and not a scrap of good stuff was left. And that was a freaking huge area. That being said though, it's hard not to find good stuff if you go out far enough and some is spectacular. I've never found a prize one but some of the best sagenite I've eve seen has come from the Cadys....Mel

Brian: I really miss my friends in the VGMS and I miss the rock hunting, esp, Lavic, the Cadys and the Poppy Jasper up at our old ranch. Don't miss Commiefornia itself, one bit and from what I hear,it's getting more sucky all the time *L*...Mel

Wonder how long it will be before they start charging sales tax on food? They keep coming up with innovative ways to take our money away and then waste it. But Commiefornia does have some damn fine rocks! Jean

Jan, I agree. I've hunted most the western state quite a bit and California, especially the deserts and the coast ranges, is remarkable in the amount of cool rocks you can find. If the freaking politicians, BLM and military hadn't closed off 90% of it, it would really be outrageous hounding! For sure better than any other state in the union. I wish I could show you guys how it used to be out there when my pop first started taking me hounding back in the 1950's. I remember once we went just west of Ludlow off old route 66 and only feet off he road the desert was paved with the most incredible moss and plume agate. You could fill your sack with unbelievable material and not be fifty feet from your car. Berkeley Hills in the Bay area, at one time you could fill a pickup with big T-eggs in a few minutes at some construction sites....Mel

Maybe when it gets cooler we could have a RTH field trip to Lavic and the Cadys and get to meet eachother and find some cool rocks? Would anyone be interested?

We need to buy Mel a round trip plane ticket. I'll put in a couple of Jacksons for that!
Yes, of course, I am in.

*L* Mel don't like to leave his horses and Mel don't fly on planes after a little incident with a plane on a museum collecting trip to Baja. When a car runs out of gas you can just step out of it *L*.....Mel
