Hmmmmmm Beeeeer!!!!!
I don't remember what the SoCal desert is like in July, but in Phx it would be 112 with chance of rain. I say we wait for cooler weather. If you know of any places in Big Bear area I will be up for it July 4th weekend. :-)

Tim, I was at the north Cady's in December one year and it hit 95. The next year, same time it froze so hard it burst my plastic jeep can full of water. This area is right off Devil's Playground. In July the temps get horribly hot. My policy is in winter on the Mojave, if your car breaks down, you can hike out. Summer, you get lucky, very lucky, you might live but mostly, you die. For hot weather hunts, I would only try the Basin Road area as the Mojave often has water now. I wouldn't go far from the river. Best time to hunt the Cady's is October-February but that's when the winds often blow too and it's a bad area for sandstorms.. Weather forecasts seem to be pretty good for predicting wind out there and if you get a good day that time of year, it can be really pretty..Mel

OK. I have years of snake hunting in the Mojave with careful attention paid to the weather. October is gorgeous - mostly - !! As Mel alluded to, it CAN be hot anytime, but October is the end of summer there. November is reliably too cool for reptiles and therefore perfect for rock hounding. Mel is attending in spirit only. Dad-gummed horses. Should we start planning one now? If we agree, we need a new thread in trips... Mel, Afton canyon?

Scott: IMHO the hunting grounds actually off the part of Afton Canyon near the campground are fairly hunted out. Best bet for good finds if there has been no flash flooding to turn over gravel beds in the canyon or at the Basin Road end of the canyon is to cross the tracks off basin road and follow the marked dirt road that goes around the east end of the hills and heads kind of south for several miles and then cuts back towards the west/sw into the canyons to Pepto Bismol Hill, back there, there is agate all over the place and the rockhound campsites are very obvious. Road should be easy to follow on Google sat maps or yahoo sat maps. One map I found one time was so good I could see the footpath into the Fluorite Mine Plume beds.....Mel

Mel, I'm really impressed by how fracture-free those slabs seem to be. Those are really beautiful pieces. Thanks for sharing the photos and the intel. Tried Basin Road one time with my Intrepid about two years back. Quickly turned around ... yikes that was rough.

Paul, In my younger days, I used to hound n a VW bus. I drove in there by myself and camped on the north side of the RR tracks one time and got caught in a sandstorm. Buried my van up to the bottom of the doors and took me most of a day to dig out. Another time, I was headed in and discovered some guys in a huge 4 X 4 stuck in a huge hole in the sand, must've been five feet deep. The left fork of Basin Rd going south which leads down to the tracks can get covered by some very deep sand dunes when it blows. Another issue is the RR folks don't like rockhounds much and often intentionally park train cars across the Basin road RR crossing rendering it impassible, which really sucks as there ain't another place to cross. They will also raise Hell with you if you try and camp on the big flat gravel pad just south of the tracks at the crossing. Most material from the Cady's seems to be pretty solid.
Paul, if you talk to the the Ventura guys. See if you can get the directions into the hidden canyon with the Geode and sagenite beds. I guided Ron Wise in there once. Bad drive in but the collecting there is really good...... Mel
