Great wildlife shots Geoff. Your photos make me want to break down and try to figure out how to post photos on the forum. I have lots i'd like to share, but this photo posting is all pretty new to me. I do have a Photobucket account, so that is a start!

Thanks guys. Randy, caribou=reindeer. Up here caribou is used when referencing wild animals, reindeer are domesticated sausage reserves. Mmmmm reindeer sausage. Grizman, I've never had problems with posting photos on forums until photobucket and pro boards rolled out new sites. Now I type my entire post, code and all, in word then copy and paste it into the forum. Even then it only works 70% of the time. Real pain in my ass.

OMG, I just woke up. My head is killing me. I saw the Eiders, fainted dead away and cracked my head on some Blue Pearl (Spectrolite) granite. Dang, I have no clue how long I was knocked out. I need a Vicodin.
King Eider is the holy grail of duck hunters and the Spectacled eider is a distant dream! To hunt the King I must trip to the Pribiloff Islands in January! Party with the crab men!
Those are some really excellent images of some really excellent animals.
Caribou sausage making me hungry.I have mallard sausage in the freezer. Need to finish it!
Thank you.

Wow, those bird pics make me want to get a plane ticket right now! As an avid bird watcher those closeups make me drool! I thought that was an artic loon - never realized difference with Pacific loon and had to look up. Looks like the weather is ideal right now. How long is your summer and when do the bugs get bad? Please keep the pictures coming :-)

Sun sets in 38 days. Mosquitoes are killer, bigger than some of the birds. A little known trick... Stay away from bananas and take B12 supplements. I rarely get bit while my colleagues are drowning in Off and still swatting at them. Yesterday was dead clear all day. These pictures are from 10pm ish so the sun was a little lower than I like for photography. I was watching a thunderstorm roll in from the Brooks Range for a couple hours, finally arrived around 11 when I got back to camp. Yesterday was in the high 60's low 70's, but last week it was pushing 80 for a few days in a row. Right now its cloudy, humid, and mid 60's. I'm going to head back out tonight, I saw some Greater and Lesser Scaup and several more varieties of geese.

The flip side to that is the sun doesn't rise from November 24th to January 18th. Our longest day is 63 days, 23 hours. Our longest night is 54 days, 22 hours.

One does not. We have many snow birds in these parts. They tend to work a 3x3 schedule. Makes the commute more tolerable.

A veritable duck hunter's bird watcher's paradise! Are the King Eiders rare? What a funny looking bill it has!
Thanks for sharing, Geoff - those pics are great! Jean

I am sitting, and boy, was I glad I was!
Awesome images of some terrific wildlife! Thank you for sharing.
Jean, it's bird watching all the way. We hunter's are honorable and sporting. We'd never consider hunting waterfowl during the reproductive season. They are there to mate and make more ducks for the hunters!
As for King Eider's abundance? As far as I can tell from my research of the Pribiloff Island trip, the populations are at historic highs. That is good. That does not make them common. Mallards are less than historic highs but still everywhere. Aside from the crazy bull, the bird has lot's of interesting features. They breed up there in Geoff's neck of the wood. But many ducks do. Scaup, Pintail, Northern Shoveler, Tundra Swan all migrate to the lower 48. King Eider migrate only far enough south to have open seawater to feed in. If the Bering Sea freezes they go a little further south. That is one freaking tough fowl. Feeding in 28 degree seawater!
Geoff also showed as Spectacled Eider. Until very recently, that bird's winter range was unknown. Not a numerous species, we saw them reproducing in the summer up north, but when winter came they disappeared. I have a book with an image. There were hundreds of Spec Eiders all huddled together using their body heat to keep the sea ice from freezing over the hole they were using to feed under! Eiders are the most badass ducks!
Geoff I am glad you have the photography and wildlife watching bug!
