I have accepted a promotion that will require me to move. One (of many) unfortunate results will be the loss of my walk in basement that I use as a shop. The temperature remains fairly constant year round, so I can cut rocks anytime. Lately I have been trying to organize some of my rocks. I am a food broker and have access to discarded koolaid, Raid, etc. merchandising racks. I recently scored about 48' for old grocery store shelving. I wanted to post some pics before I have to tear it all down. Since we lived in the basement while we were finishing the house, it has a kitchen area with a double sink. Great for cleaning and tumbling needs! This is where I get rocks ready for cutting These are some of the re-purposed racks used for storage. To the right of this area is where my wood saws (table, chop & radial arm) & drill press are located. Here is the shelving I mentioned with tubs holding rough and slabs. This is a shot from the roll-up door featuring my kingdom I have been draining my saws today. No telling when I will be able to get back to cutting...sniff...

Thanks guys....even my husband is planning my new shop. Unfortunately it won't have the constant temperatures because I am moving to south Louisiana....no basements there. I don't want to sound like I am whining (altho, I am)....it's just that I just put up the shelving...I can spend hours down there sorting, cutting, washing, polishing, cutting, sanding, sweeping, re-sorting, building, cutting and it starts over. Yep, Roy...it will be better. So what size is the ideal shop??? 20'X30' or 30'X30' I work hard and deserve it!

And 1/3 of what area I have is my workbench for house repairs too!! Heck if I ever get the chance I'm going to add a second 8x20 right next to mine and open the walls up so I have more room for storage and work space!! Good luck with the move and think on this.. in Louisiana, the temp is fairly constant all year round, just get a well insulated building for the summer and add an A/C unit to help keep it cool!!

John: Yep, I know about Lower LA....I was born and raised there. I am moving to Thibodaux area. My family still lives there. I left 43 yrs. ago and now I am going back. Mario, the temp does remain fairly constant including high humidity. Man-> get a bigger shop...my closet is bigger than that. I admire your perseverance.
I spent today packing up rocks, saws, genie, lots of tools, tumblers, etc....I'm pooped.

I am working on getting a 2nd shed to double up the space I have now and give me a more dedicated area to work in. If it all goes right I would have a 10x16 foot space for my rock work and since I don't have a cabbing machine yet, that would be plenty for me for now.
