KCC for the month of July 2013! Rules: Nothing has changed, Entries are not required to be started in the time frame of the contest, only finished by the deadline. All entries however will still require a photo of the slab, preform and finished cab. So no cabs pulled from the drawer. Things like intarsias, carvings, jewelry, and composite type cabs can not be entered in an effort to keep the contest somewhat fair by just entering free form style cabs. Again, please remember to include a pic or two of the original slab, then a pic of the preform, and finally, the finished cab. We ask that all entries submitted to this contest be unique to the RTH version of the Killer Cab Contest. I will do my best to monitor the other forums for duplicate entries, and any duplicates will be disqualified. You can enter any shape cab and your choice of mineral. Feel free to share with us what ever you like about the material, the process or what ever else you would like to share. Cabs posted here are only for the contest. Last months winner Cathy (Talkingstones) has made a generous offer to sponsor this months contest, a big thanks to Cathy! [/ Good Luck everyone! Carleton

Thanks Cathy for the generous donation :-) I'll get this month started with a cab I made in early July. "Stormy Graveyard" from rough to wrapped, enjoy. This was my initial layout... Cabbed Wrapped

Very nice, Tommy! I love that plume, and great execution. Nice shine, too. I've got to get my butt in gear and get one entered this month. But I am not going so far as to wrap it, LOL! Jean

This is from a lava flow that was so high in iron that it converted in to hematite and limonite. Here is the rough rock I collected here in Nevada: And the slab: And the heart cab I made from it:

I had been pondering a sphere made from swiss cheese lava from pisgah. Now I need to get a hunk of that stuff! Great work!

Thanks Scott.
This was the most difficult cab yet. The material is very soft so I have to be really careful not to over grind it. And doing the round overs on the top of the heart was really tricky with the wheels being so close on the Genie. I was really happy with the results though.
I think I still have a big chunk of this outside or can get some more Monday when I go back out collecting if you want to try a piece. I don't know how well it will sphere though being so soft. It may just grind down in to mud.
Where I found this there was a small wall of the flow. The darker red in hematite and the rest is the limonite, which is more of a golden-brown color. The other pieces I have not collected yet are almost all limonite, which I think is also a little harder than the hematite.

My entry isn't actually "mine" at all, but a creation of my mining & lapidary partner, Al. He's modest & kinda shy, and not a tech comfortable guy, so I hope no one minds me posting this for him. It's too pretty not to show it off! Plus, he'd be floored if he won the prize! Here's what the rough looks like (but not the actual raw slab). It's Panoche Hills "California" Poppy jasper, from western Fresno County, CA. And here's the cut stone, photographed in indirect sunshine & with a flash. Thanks for watching, friends! Kris

Ooh, hadn't seen that one yet. Very nice, Kris. Well, I had done this one for the KCC this month, then did another and had a hard time deciding which one to go with. In the end, went with my first pick. Photos aren't the best, and the sun's not out yet today, otherwise I'd retake them. I might repolish this one after I get my shipment from Ameritool - new diamond toppers - in a couple days. For what it's worth, here's my entry. Don't know if you'd call this plume, flame or something else. The purchased slab. Reminds me of an underwater scene, seaweed fronds waving in the ocean column. The preform The cab Teal colored stripe at bottom is fascia board on house The girdle. Those thin slabs are a bear to get the flat spot out! And lastly, the back This one will get wrapped, haven't decided on gold-filled or silver.... Thanks for your consideration! Jean

Here is my entry for July. Wild Hrose jasper. Here is the rough, I don't know why but, the slab I cut was 5/8". What was I thinkin! And, I almost forgot to take a slab picture. The preform The #100 rough grind Profile Shine is very good but hard to show Finished I see that there is some stiff competion this month. All Great cabs!
