After two false starts, I finally made it out to Nethers Farm on Flint Ridge. I came away with over 140# of beautiful flint. Some of my favorites had banding. Colors ranged from white and gray to warm Autumnal colors. Picking were easy for a rock tumbler like me as I could pick up the best cast offs that the knappers couldn't use. Fully 3/4 of my haul was just a matter of sorting through leavings in and around the pits. But I did dig in the clay in a few spots to pull some material that others hadn't seen - glad I did.
So pics from the trip:
My wife made sure we had sustenance for a week in the wild rather than a day on the farm:
Here is the CRV all packed up with hammers, sledge, pick, pails, water and an overnight bag:
Grant in one of the pits. There were 3 large ones (about 15 foot deep) and 2 smaller ones:
Heading to high ground. We had our choice of sun and shade. Remember to to bring sunblock for the former and bugspray for the latter:
We did wear long pants, but I couldn't bear to wear the long sleeves - just a few minor flesh wounds from shrapnel. We worked in separate pits most of the time, so at least weren't causing collateral damage. Just to keep everything chronological, you have to wait to see pictures of my take. On the way to the hotel near Columbus we passed the Longaberger corporate headquarters. Here is a portion of the building with flagpoles for scale:
Went to the Columbus zoo on Sunday. Had never been:
And finally the payoff after we got home this afternoon:
Would recommend this location to anyone. Wasn't crowded either. Grant and I had the place to ourselves for the whole 3 and a 1/2 hours we were there. Another family arrived just as we were paying and leaving. Easy for newbs but believe there would be a payoff for you hardcore folks as well. Sorry for the cell phone pics, and thanks for looking.
