Hi All
I've just joined this Forum in order to hopefully contact other gem nuts in the UK. I live in Bedfordshire, England and recently had a holiday with my husband, Jeff, in Norfolk where we visited the Gem Shop in Cromer. We bought a tumbler and several packets of rough stones (the tumbler is now working away in our shed<BG>) Some of the stones were identified for us but quite a few we have no idea of what they are. We already have several books on rocks and gemstones, and a couple I ordered a few days ago from Amazon arrived yesterday, but we're still having problems with identification. We're hoping that there might be someone knowledgible not too far away who would be willing to help.
A couple of years ago we had a year driving around Australia in a motorhome and one of the highlights of the trip was a 3 week stay in the Queensland gemfields where we collected a lot of tiny sapphires and zircons, plus a few other bits and pieces. We then stayed for a couple of days at Mt Hay which is an extinct volcano where fossikers can pick up geodes and pieces of Spherulitic Rhyolite.
Thank Susan (from the US) for pointing me in this direction, this Forum certainly looks as if I'm now in the right place.
Looking forward to hearing from other members, especially those in the UK.
Regards
Lesley

Welcome to the forum. While there are a few members from Europe, expect answers coming your way from many possible directions, yet America will likely have more answers for you than any other.

Welcome to the forum, Lesley. When your rocks are out of your tumbler, you can post pictures here and someone (not me) will probably be able to help you identify them. If you have trouble tumbling, there will definitely be help for you here.

Welcome Lesley. If you can post pictures of rocks you have questions about, we may be able to help you.
For those not in the know, Fossikers is British for Rockhounds.

Glad you made it, Lesley. Yes, there are many people far more knowledgeable than I that can help with identification if you post photos. It often amazes me the wealth of knowledge here.

Thanks for the warm welcome, folks.
I'll have a go at photoing these rocks, but I warn you there's a lot of 'em. I presume I should put them in the "Rock Identification Library". I've just tried with my little Kodak camera, but couldn't really get the focus sharp enough. I'll try tomorrow with my SLR - should do a bit better.

Welcome Lesley! Looks like you were traveling through amazing areas. If you have been in Australia, have you found any pet wood too? Looking forward to see pictures from your collection. Adrian
