Found a way to upload most pics from my trip to the markets a few days ago. So here, lets start with something everyone is familiar with. Rainbow OB a favorite for Krystee. Just to be allowed to take the pictures, I pretended to be working for a boss who has asked me to bring pics back for evaluation. The one on the right is about 2 foot tall weights about 16kg (about 35 pounds) and is priced at 5000RMB before haggling. Thats about 700US$. But my favorites where those two Countdown has begun, 36 hours to go, then I'm outta here,..... back to my normal habits..... Best regards, Kurt

Gorgeous pieces. Seems like $700 and down is a pretty good price for all the work that went into that. You think so? Thanks for sharing.

You've been posting amazing stuff Kurt. Where are you? The Hong Kong Jewelry Show? Some other show? I guess I missed that post.

OOOOOOOHHHH my freaking goodness!!!!!!!!....... I'm a little speechless......... give me a second................... WOW!!!!!!! At the shop I work at we have nothing like this. If we did.... guessing 3K or more (Amethyst and/or Citrine tower geodes around 2 feet tall go for $1200, raw, not carved/polished, but gorgeous crystals in mother nature's natural form!) I have never seen OB so big and solid before. I think I am going to be dreaming about this post tonight, lol! And, in my dreams I will be the one that worked it!!!!!! Btw.... I worked on Mexican Royal Velvet Obsidian tonight.... talk about a rainbow of colors! Little..... but it will be killer when I finish it in a few days, I'm liking it so far But, of course... it's nothing like what you had the privilege to see! I'm sooooo jealous but also soooo happy that you were able to share this with us!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!

You better be careful kk. Do not want our kk in trouble No worries, I learned cheating from the best, by just living among them. And still getting lessons, as seen in the crazy purchase I made on that day. Yes Mark, It sounds incredibly cheap by western standards. As said a few days ago that market would leave anyone trying to make a decent business with self-made cabs or carvings in tears. Simply can't compete at those prices. Quality is not up to standard that we enjoy making things our-self, but I can assure you that looking carefully at some of the items, I did see some really nice work, yet it was not much more expensive. You've been posting amazing stuff Kurt. Where are you? The Hong Kong Jewelry Show? Some other show? I guess I missed that post. Rick: I'm 150 km north of Hong Kong in the provincial capital of Canton (on assignment for a school summer project). The city here is called Guangzhou. As it happens, they have here one of the oldest permanent markets for jade that is also one of the biggest in the world today. But you will not only find jade of-course, there is lots of other things too. I would call it " EBay central" I wish, the Hong Kong jewelery fair would have raw material of this kind, at least there would be some sort of guarantee. But the Hong Kong shows only concentrate on the jewelery-making process without lapidary/specimen sections. :)Krystee. Thought that that might get your attention. You where instantly on my mind as I turned the corner seeing this shop. They seem to specialize on OB as they had the whole shop full with them. Will post separate groups of pictures from that day over the week. Looking forward to your MRVOB. Will be as usual, a sight to behold. Best regards, Kurt

Thanks for the info Kurt. I'm pretty familiar with what goes on in Guangzhou -- acquaintances have a cutting factory there. You're right about EBay Central!

spectacular!! I hope to have sphere like that.... someday.... Thats just about it, I was enamored by the colors, but even more fascinated by the fact of seeing near perfect orbs that are perfectly fused. I checked the blue one out, after she put it on the table, allowing me to look all round the piece. I could not find a single spot that would have indicated that the orb is glued into place. I'm comfortable to claim that the whole thing is made in one single piece.

They look machine made, not hand carved! wow! Were the colors that intense or the lighting helped make them pop?

Most likely, they are machine-made. The contours are very, very uniform. If I understand right, you can produce 4 of a kind in 8 hours with one machine, either following a mold or laser-scan.
Those machines are a plague for the Jade industry, as finishing touches are applied by hand and mistakes are added to give appearance of hand-made pieces. Other industries (stones) are not yet that aware of it. By the time they do, it will be near impossible to differentiate.
As for colors: No real special lights in that building. The colors are visible on the one on the right from any angle. The blue/purple one is helped by the angle the picture was taken from, yet still very strong.
