I don't mean to complicate things fish, I didn't expect to get all I liked, so if someone else wants some i'll give up 1, 2, and 17 and keep #12 and #13, if there already packed i'll take them. mark

LOL, I just found a site that calls this material Mexican motor oil obsidian, because cut and cabbed properly it looks like motor oil poured on water. This is going to be interesting material to play with.

Hey Dan, Those pictures look better here than on your phone. Glad you talked me into doing the Yorba Linda sale. Good seeing you at the Searchers meeting Tuesday night.

Just picked up my package. Looks great and thanks for the extras.
I have never cut obsidian before. Any tips on cutting this stuff, especially in regards to orientation if required. In the large piece it appears the patterns run several directions.

Got mine too, thanks so much. Question: Does it matter if you orient mahogany obsidian?

I am FAR from an expert, but I got some advice from one recently on this subject as far as cutting the 'sheen' obsidians are concerned.
0 degrees would be parallel to the sheen pattern you can see but 0 degrees usually only gives you one color. If you can see the lines or bands in the obsidian, each one is a different sheen or color. Most pendants are cut at 7 or 8 degrees and should give you a few colors, depending on how close together the bands are. Another way to look at it is 0 degrees would be parallel to the bands, so if you cut exactly parallel to the bands you will only have one band showing, when you cab these with a domed cab you can also create a cat's eye effect in the center or highest layer of the cab, sometimes if the bands are really close you can create mulitple cats eye effects.
This was for the rainbow, but prob applies to the other sheen obsidians. If this is not correct, by all means, someone chime in...just trying to help.

It depends on how far apart the bands are, and how wide you want the bands in your finished cab. I've used anywhere from 2 to 6 degrees. A lot also depends on how thick you make your cabs. If the bands are very close together, you can get a very nice bulls eye effect on thick cabs (1/4" or more) by cutting parallel to the bands.

thanks for the insight, I haven't seen too much obsidian with straight banding before. so somewhere between 2 and 7 deg. I just don't want to do much "practicing" on this nice material.
