WOW! 2200 miles in five days,I'm pooped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Had a great time though,my wife and I spent our ann.. traveling to Montana,Wyoming,Washington,Idaho, than back home to Oregon... Spent three days in the Beartooth Mountains in Cooke City,MT,than on to the Grand Tetons, than Idaho and Washington was a blur-LOL,drove through central Oregon in rock country, but was to tired to want any interest to hunt rocks-LOL We do want to go back to central Oregon and start fresh in John Day,than come towards the Sisters... On the trip,I did some hounding on the "Yellowstone River",panning for gold on the Beartooth Mountains, rockhounding in and around Cooke City,MT.... Met up with my brother and his wife in Montana for three days, than parted ways.. I got all four of us hunting rocks,we all found some thumbnails rocks, plus they realized its not half bad finding rocks-LOL.. Tired for now, will post pics later and a few videos..Brought home alot of nice material too... (Sapphire gravel, grab bag gravel, agates, petwood, variety of stones and some jars full of gravel from the mountain streams to pan for gold..) Later my rockhounding friends....I think a nap is in order.............Thumbs up

panamark I thought you were in Panama. lol
I am 55 miles east of Cody and make quite a few trips to Cook City. A friend from high school owns the largest souvenir shop there. Another friend that goes to Cook City every summer to sell rocks and jewelery is the one that told me about RTH a couple of years ago.
It looks like you had a really good trip even though is was a bit hectic. And a trip through the mountains is always good. I probably panned for gold not too far from where you were. Did you go through Red Lodge or Sunlight Basin? Jim

Did you go through Red Lodge or Sunlight Basin? Jim Jim whats your friends name and is he on RTH? I met up with a guy selling rocks and jewelery in Cooke City. His name was Mike Hamilton...Lives in Cooke City and California... I gave him some pointers on Baculite fossils, than bought a beautiful Montana moss agate from him... The photo does it no justice either! PS: No Jim,we came up through Livingston,so I could hunt the "Yellowstone" River for Montana moss agate and petwood...(People always telling me that a guy could only find Montana moss agate in eastern Montana on the "Yellowstone" River,I wanted to prove them wrong..(I DID)..LOL We do visit the "Beartooth" Highway as much as we can while visiting my brothers...I know there are a few old mines up there I would like to rumble through there tailings... Jim one thing I did find out about is that I now live at 300 feet above sea level, than vacation at 7800 feet above sea level,it kicked my butt!!!!! LOL

panamark I thought you were in Panama. lol Jim Jim, usually I spend spring thru Fall in these beautiful mountains. But Yeah, even I don't like the winters here any more (except for snowboarding!) so I get to escape to Panama.

But Yeah, even I don't like the winters here any more (except for snowboarding!) so I get to escape to Panama. You lucky dog. Panama was my next destination after China but family matters shut that down. I will not be able to go this winter but I hope for the winter after that. Mike is the one that I was talking about. Super nice guy. I have been up to see him three times and once he invited me to stay at his house because I froze my butt off the night before when I was camping. Last summer he sold some of my jewelry and at the end of the season I told him to keep what did not sell. The lady that I went to school with owns the gift shop on the north side of the road east of where Mike is set up. Gorgeous country and I think everyone should get to see it at least once. The park now has over three million visitors per year so Cook City is a pretty good spot to be selling gifts and souvenirs. The funny thing is that a lot of the people ask for things made locally in Montana and seldom Wyoming. WYOMING HAS 90% OF THE PARK. We must have gotten a bad rap for something. You are allowed to pan for gold in the park now but if you take anything like a sluice box and they catch you it will not be pretty. Glad you got home safe. Jim

Dang I didn't know you could pan in the "Park"!!!! I would have,I just pan with a 14" pan,not much, but it gets my urges fixed up with abit of color....LOL Isn't that funny that tourist think Yellowstone Park is in Montana!! LOL Must not look at a map for the boundery states.."History one o one in school....(Well use to be..) Some morons that hear the name North Dakota, think its in Canada!!! (Now thats getting a bit stupid, don't ya' think)!!!LMAO Hotels were reasonable,if you booked 6 to 7 months in advance(we did)...The food is crazy high there, just for simple meals its just over $20.00 a couple,if you want steak,or other higher eats, look around $30.00 to $60.00 per person...You eat good in Cooke City,we usually ate breakfast and a late lunch and call it good... We were old school and bought bread, sandwich meat and mustard while in the Park...I'm a water drinker,so I saved on that part..LOL Gas was average, just a tad high, not much... This was our third time in Cooke City and "Yellowstone Park",my wifes first time in the "Tetons",my second.... Jim,its Cody next time, will give ya' a holler when we do,ok buddy...Thumbs up

Or maybe you mean you can pan but you have to put anything you find back, LOL. I thought the park had VERY strict rules about removing any minerals at all. I will have to check into it. Thx.
