Awesome photos. We have the horny toads up here also and they are my friends that go hounding with me since there usually are no humans to go along. They do not have much fear and will let me pick them up. Then when I want them to go they will not get off my hand. I have to pick them up off my hand with my other hand and set them down on the ground. I have been wanting to take one home for a pet but I am afraid that I would kill it.
Wouldn't mind seeing all of your desert photos. I need to quit being so lazy and post more photos of this area. Jim

Holy Smokes!!!! That's The Flat Tailed Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma m'calli). Where did you see that? I have hunted those for prolly 150 hours to no avail. But I was hunting the dunes and that ain't dune habitat! Congrats on a terrific find!

Tommy, let's go in April! What's going on in April? We're definitely going down there for the Tucson show ... how fun would that be to turn my patch of dirt into an RTH campground for a couple of weeks heehee. Theres no facilities but there is running water from a shared well.

Scott, I never addressed your ID on this horned lizard. I had no idea it was a flat tail, never gave it much thought, really. They are all over out there, but here's the location of one of our rock picking spots 33.somethingsomething -116.somethingsomething. I know some of my pics were taken there. Here's three more, guess they're all flat tails? Wouldn't mind seeing all of your desert photos. I need to quit being so lazy and post more photos of this area. Jim @wampidy, just for you. Here's a few more for your visual delight. Santa Rosa Mountains (in Santa Rosa Wilderness, where else?) North Of Ocotillo Wells, east of Borrego Springs, west of Salton Sea Vallecito Mountains to the south of our camp spot. I love the play of light out in the desert, the long shadows in the early morning and late afternoon. And to the east of them, Fish Creek Mountains. Some weird air currents around there, always some strange clouds. Can you say "lenticular?" Another lizard for Pat . A young chuckwalla. These two photos were taken at Painted Gorge, northeast of the town of Ocotillo. Young zebra tailed lizard Ever do this to your friends when they pass out? This was Cali's first trip to the desert, she was plum wore out! The dog incessantly chases tennis balls, won't leave you alone when she has one. Someone say icecream? This was taken in Quartzsite a couple years ago. Very spoiled dogs! Camp with just my dogs Sunset in Quartzsite (see the saguaro? Don't have those here.) And a sunset from Ocotillo Wells, looking west towards San Diego Thanks again for looking.

WOW!!!!!!!!! The contrast between here and there is incredible. I thought the foot hills here were pretty stark. How much sand do you have to eat when you are there? The fifth photo down has some white spots around the middle. Are those hounders, campers ? Your sunset photos are phemonamil. Really good sunset photos are hard to take and you really popped a couple of those. We only have two lizards here and one of them is impossible to catch. Those look pretty contented as do the horny toads here. I have no idea what the real names are. Now I am going to have to show some photos of this area. I took some new ones a couple of days ago when my son and I went artifact hunting. I could only shoot the close hills and rocks because the smoke from Idaho was so thick you could taste it. Thank you very much for showing those. Jim

Lizards look like itty-bitty dinosaurs. Cute at that size.
Are the spikes are the horned lizards sharp? Do they emit anything? Not sure I've ever picked one up, though I have saved a few salamanders around here.
Thanks for posting more.

@wampidy When the place gets packed with off-roaders, and the wind dies down to nothing, the dirt that goes up into the air and just hangs there. if you are riding a quad or buggy down a wash that's been seeing a lot of traffic, you eat and breathe dust. This is not fog, but dust in the air. The white spots in the fifth photo down are other campers. This was an off-weekend. You get to Halloween, Thanksgiving, Chritsmas, this place gets packed! New Years ia a big weekend, too. That's when I met my husband out in Glamis (see what I mean by finding someone doing what you like?). It got too crazy out there, we quite going there better than ten years ago. Pat, the horns on the horned lizard are hard and sharp, and they can poke a hole in your finger by turning their necks if you are holding them. They don't have any poison or anything in them. Glad you both liked them!

yes Jean, those are m'calli Flat Tailed Horned Toads. The stripe is diagnostic.
I love the long oval bodies they have.
The chuckwalla is a young (2-3 year old) female chuckwalla. Two or three more years and she'll be breeding size.
Love the wiped out canine with stone massage technique.

I envy, in some ways, the couples that have stayed together their entire adult lives. Like you said Jean, it is a matter of finding someone that likes to do the same things. I had trouble getting my wives to enjoy rebuilding old cars and building a lot of other things. They had a hard time trying to get me to like drinking and partying every weekend.
A friend is going to introduce me to a crazy woman that makes a lot of jewelry and loves to go hounding. There may be hope for me yet.
That area looks like a great place to visit but I don't think I could do it very often because of all the dust and sand. When I was in Marine Corps boot camp in San Diego they made a group of us lay face down in a sand area then swim. I think that it was the worst non painful experience of my life. I have not liked sand ever since. Jim

I didn't even mention how it gets when the wind is blowing sand and boulders around. It's not all the time, but sometimes it seems like it. It'll etch the windows and paint on your vehicles. We've been out hounding rocks when the wind was raging, it gets to be almost like white-out conditions, making it impossible to see and easy to get lost. The sand gets everywhere (and I mean everywhere!) - eyes, ears, hair, inside clothes... Waiting for photos of your area. Has the smoke cleared from the Idaho fires yet?

Well, then a compromise is in order. They can drink while they assist in the rebuilding of old cars. Then you can enjoy a nice meal while they party. Or some similar permutation. Crazee women may be great. Depends on the flavor of crazee. A close friend only dates crazee women. He is 2 for 3 in 10 years. #2 was psycho crazee and nobody in our social group wanted to be near her. We saw very little of him until he finally kicked her out. The final straw is when she said to choose between her and the daughters. His answer was, "that is a simple choice. When will you remove your belongings from my home?"

The last crazy woman I had stabbed another woman three times in the stomach. The cops hauled her to jail and I hauled my stuff to a friends garage. It took a few loads but I finally got it all hauled out of town. Way out of town. lol Jim

I will wallow in it as long as it isn't blowing in my eyes and all the other places. Like you said, EVERYWHERE. As soon as the wind started blowing I would be out of there. That stuff will blow into a camper that you know is sealed up tight. Jim Sorry I missed that so I am editing. The smoke has cleared up a lot. The wind has not been blowing at all.
